No CD Problem, yes another but there's a twist.

OK I bought HL2 off eBay, from this guy, he gave me his Steam account and is gonna ship the CDs for now I am downloading the games, CS:S is done, 100% ready to play, but I double click it, and it says NO CD DRIVE DETECTED, now I know I can't use the CD Drive because for some reason it's unplugged and I'm too lazy to re-connect it, and for what I don't even have the CDs yet, anyway, so yeah I can't play CS:S but HL2 is still downloading it's at 21% do I NEED the cd to play it? I downloaded the games through Steam so shouldn't it like....work without the cd? I talked to some friends of mine and they said that they don't need the CD to play it, or do you think HL2 HAS to be finished downloading so I can play CS:S?? Help!

Sounds like the guys account has the Retail version on it. So yes, you do need the CD's.

You friends who dont need the CD either bought it through Steam itself, or got a no-CD crack.

Those who bought it off Steam simply downloaded the game in it's entirety, no CDs, thusly we can't be required to have a CD in.

But I just downloaded all of CS:S right from Steam, and HL2 is downloading...

Yes, but when the guy originaly bought the game, and installed it, that told his Steam account that his version is Retail. Steam knows that you need a CD.
