Surely there cannot be any more preloads coming on steam. Its been over the estimates of fri and thur (when we thought they might turn up) and still none today. If there aint no more, then just maybe we're getting closer to the day... the day of GOLD.

I'd would estimate there will be another one after it goes gold, maybe even 2. Plus a final activation load for the exe and dlls.

well nobody knows for sure...but i think there will be at least one more :)

They are probably holding back on the final preload(s) until the game goes gold. That would give everyone 2-3 weeks to finish preloading just before the game is available in stores. Releasing the preload sooner would not be helpful because it would just sit on hard drives longer and maybe increase the chance of the full game being cracked.

and someone would try to crack it... people will probably spend days trying to crack it...

nothing that has been encrypted and preloaded on steam has been cracked previously, what makes you think people aren't already trying and failing with what we have of the preload already?

and if you had the chance to go and play a stolen version months before the release would you? i wouldnt

well if u are referring to HL2, u are correct but as far as getting passed Steam encryption, our own Chris_D managed to pull something off about a year ago.. so um.. its not impossible.. but then again.. im sure getting Valve angry at u for encryption bypass this time around would probably get u in deep trouble with the law :)

No true Half-Life fan would use a cracked version.

...and I expect another upload, 1 at least.

As far as i remember the binks were never encrypted, they were just in a larger file and Chris extracted them from that file.

Someone trying to crack the encryption could only take a few weeks, or it could take a few years, if someone has cracked it already we probably wouldnt know anyway.

And i would say 1 more big preload (maps?), and maybe another with code+engine in ect.

that bink wasn't encrypted, and after chris extracted that one valve started encrypting the rest of the binks.

as i said, nothing that's been encrypted and preloaded has been cracked.

Next and last preload comes after the game gone gold.

That's my speculation anyway.

Gabe has said that HL2 is 3.5GB altogether, and we only have 2.5GB of that data. There's at least another GB to go.

they cant preload the maps because they would spoil the multiplayer ( if it's in)
and btw. gabe stated that it will have about 2 gigs compressed...and the gfc's are compressed (or not?)
so be patient...

They're compressed when you download them, but once they're on your HDD they're uncompressed. They take up 2.4GB so far.

How much space have we Pre-Loaded so far? Mine downloaded very fast, so I'm not assuming much, right?

I say the first preloads were fakes, and you can only buy the box.

I've already said twice so far in the thread, pay attention. :p So far Valve have released 2.5GB, and HL2 is 3.5 altogether.

Most likely a few centuries. Seriously.

Just doing a little search on Google and I found this company that is selling a 256-bit encryption program:

There are so many Two Fish keys that a supercomputer that is a billion times faster than any one known today would not have enough time to "guess" the key until after the Sun has burned out its energy. For purposes of personal information, computer experts in security agree that the data encrypted with this program is secure for many decades. The best computer security minds in the world believe that systems like Two Fish will be secure for at least 100 years.
Valve could be using that, or maybe only 128-bit, but whatever it is, it'll be damn secure for a long time yet.

It doesnt matter how fast the preload is, everyone has the same amount in there preloads that goes in the HDD.

That would be hilarious! Imagine the guys at valve cracking up about how the whole world downloaded 2.5 gb worth of encrypted donkeyporn..

Everyone who DL HL2 will eventually go buy it because of the MP and the alongcoming mods.

There will probably be two/three more preloads, maps and the engine itself, a final one probably to fix up missed parts or something.

We already have the engine, do we not? Atleast us CSS beta testers do

I think there will be one more preload. This preload will contain the maps, which are basically the only thing left that would change besides the engine. So once the game goes gold, they know they don't need to change anything, and they start the last preload. On "opening day" they allow you to download the engine and remaining core files and everyone starts playing.

the whole point in preloading is letting you download the thing before the day of release, this way you dont have problems getting in queues or whatever.
id guess all remaining preloads will be let to be downloaded days before the release day.

I don't consider the core engine a preload. It's not going to be that big.

i expect at least one preload this week and another a few days before release assuming the gold announcement is coming very soon

Yes, but, big or not, they'll likely want to have as many people as possible with the full game prior to it being able to be played.

Just because you and 500 other people already have 98% of the content on your HD and only have to download 2% more, there will be many many more people who have 0% and need to download 100%. Every 2% that you download is 2% bandwidth that can't go to someone else during crunch time.

Actually, I'm not preloading, so that's one more person who can download. :)

Hi guys new here !
I think that we will have about 2 more downloads as another guy just stated but with the last update we will probably get notification of the activation date if not sooner (on knees praying)

for sure there will come some additional sounds and textures, also the models dont seem to be complete. maps of course, the engine itself, and the "activation thing". ah, and dont forget the usual stuff like 100mb's of corporate intro video.

after gold approvement sounds quit logical, no use in wasting bandwidth as long the maps aren't 100percent "ready".
