Michael Persinger, dude behind "the god helmet" gives a talk about consciousness and the possibility of reading people's minds. He asks what would happen if the mind became completely exposed to some kind of mind reading technology? Obviously that depends on who has control of the technology. But the way he frames the question is what would it be like if everyone had access to this abiltiy? What are the implications of having no more secrets?

One person speculates the result being an "empathetic civilization," which sounds great because people could truly understand other's perspective within a short period of time. Instead of arguing or fighting, you could just read each other's thoughts and come to an understanding quickly and peacefully, so the idea goes. Hivemind civilization...weird to think about.

You basically have zero privacy, but since everyone understands each other, do you even need it anymore?

You have greatly reduced uniqueness or individuality, but is it gone completely? What would make you "you" in a hivemind scenario? Maybe your uniqueness would come from your ability to create new ideas, and creating new ideas is more or less a matter of integrating existing ideas, which could happen a lot faster in this situation. I guess if you really wanted to do something unique with your "self", you'd have to seek novelty, think the unthunk, experience the unexperienced, etc.

How do you personally feel about ceasing to be as you are and dissolving into something larger? Do you think this is what the future holds for humanity?

Thought crime would absolutely destroy civilization as we know it. Nobody would trust anybody because even the most law abiding and good natured person can have some pretty disturbing thoughts that lurk where nobody but they know about it.

You can't prevent bad thoughts from stirring and so you should never be punished for them... and in this day and age with a people who are captivated so strongly by fear and fear mongering, the only result for knowing peoples thoughts would be an establishment of thought crime.

I imagine suddenly being able to know every thought inside someone's head would destroy friendships, families and relationships the world over. Imagine the suicide rate!

This.

We are not ready for this. Humans do not have minds, much less cultures, constructed in such a way as to handle this. Trying to apply this on a wide scale would be disastrous. You can count me among the tin-hat wearers if this tech ever comes to fruition. My thoughts are my own, and letting others privy to them would be antithetical to my individuality.

Well if we assume that this ability suddenly appeared in each of our hands, we have to define how exactly it works before we make a projection...

Can you send thoughts to people as well as read them? Has some kind of security feature been implemented in this spontaneous ability? How much control do you have?

A more useful question is how exactly might this ability/technology arise, in evolutionary terms, rather than what would happen if it suddenly appeared in our hands. That's how things work in the real world.

Military research seems pretty likely to me.

We're probably all f*cked

I'd rather kill myself than wear a tacky thing like that.

*reads your mind*

I'd rather kill myself than be friends with someone who didn't like tacky headwear. :frown:
