Hi, I'd like to completely transfer data over from my old hard drive into my new one. All the programs I've found so far cost money and I'm in no position to do such a thing. I will not pirate such programs and want one that can completely transfer all the data, registry and etc.

Can my demands be met? Or will I have to reach into my wallet and pay?

The answer is in YOUR HANDS.

edits: A few of the files are corrupt. Etc.

edits2: My old hard drive is dead. No need for this anymore.

This method involves the use of the common copy and paste routine of Windows.

First, you must install the new drive. Install it as a slave to the old drive.

1. Partition and format the new drive just like normal. It must have the same number and size partitions as the old drive.
2. In Windows Explorer, choose View/Options. Select Show All Files. Deselect Hide MS-DOS file extensions for the file types that are registered. Click OK.
3. Choose Edit/Select All. All files and directories will be highlighted. Then click the copy icon in the toolbar.
4. Select the D: drive, or the letter of your new drive. Click the paste icon in the toolbar. The file transfer will take place, and may take a while depending on the size of the drive transferred.
5. Install the Windows system files to the new drive by going to the MS-DOS prompt and typing SYS D: at the C:> prompt.
6. Exit Windows and turn off the computer.
7. Swap the cable connectors going to the drives. Change the jumper settings to make the new drive master. Reboot. The system should work normally. If not, your old drive is still completely intact and can be used to get the system back in operation.

Hope that helps ya Shens. :)
EDIT: May I ask, which new hard drive have you chosen?

I have a WinPE CD that has Norton Ghost on it so I can just make a Ghost image and push in on another harddrive

Yeah I need to move a crapload of music and stuff from one computer to the other, swapping hard-drives seems too complicated. I'm just gonna use a lot of time and a load of cd-rws...

Decent ones. Don't buy Logik CD-RWs, they suck.

I had to do this a couple of years ago. Trust me, put the HDD in your computer and transfer the files over. Burning off all the CD's and then recompiling your collection is a nightmare and so so boring. :hmph:
