We haven't got any news for a while so I was just wondering if it was just a marketing scheme or just the fact that the people at Valve are too busy trying to make the September 30th date...

Considering the fact that VU (the French DP) is not doing pretty well economically, they'll probably try to push back the game just to make a bit more profit during the Chrstmas season, if they have anything to say in the first place.

Guess I'll just have to wait and see (as millions of peps out there)...

Just my 2 cents.

I don't understand the idea of "pushing the game back to make more money". I mean, if the game is released at the end of September, it will still be available for Christmas.

And regarding news, Valve is very secretive about Half-Life 2, they haven't told us anything since May because they don't want to spoil it. They've done a good job of keeping it quiet considering the amount of interest.

I agree Feath, holding a release back on almost anything will not generate more revenue I don't know where this shit comes from but apparently it has caught on.

I don't understand this idea either but it's the way it has been done for the majority of games.

I don't think any game has ever been delayed so they can get more sales.

Games being rushed so they can get out by a certain date (like Christmas or the release date of a film) is a different story. That does happen.

Here's what they should do:

Release game on September 30th.
Then, after it wins Game of the Year they start making tons of advertisements about that.

People are more likely to buy the "Game of the Year" for someone else than they are the "Most Anticipated Game of the Year" because the former means they know it is great while the latter could be all hype.

No it doesn't, it's not mysterious at all: marketing revolves around selling you shit you don't need, but in cases like HL2 you don't need marketing: it already has the biggest fanbase/community.

Here's a thought.... HL2 goes retail on Sept 30th as planned. But around November 25th (for the US Thanksgiving holiday weekend - biggest shopping day of the year) they release the super-duper HL2 Special Edition (Metal Box, DVD, T-Shirt, Nerf Crowbar, exclusive movies & interviews, a few new levels & models, etc, etc).

Even people who already have the game would consider buying something with a lot of extra goodies in it, family and friends might buy them as christmas gifts for old and new users, and new customers could be attracted by the 'new & improved' release.
