Portal was released last year and received great critical reviews and many gamers fell in love with the game, the Weighted Companion Cube became an overnight success, as did the game. Earlier this year it was let slip that Portal 2 was a certainty. Now Doug Lombardi has informed Eurogamer that we shouldn't expect to see any more Portal this year.[br]
"In typical Valve tradition, it won't be Portal with different colours," said Lombardi, dressed as a companion cube. "I think that when you hit something like that, you have two choices: you can quickly replicate it and stick it out there - do the opportunistic thing and cash in on it; or you can do the crazy thing like we did after Half-Life was so successful and go off and try and say, 'Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary.'[br]"That's the spirit I think we're approaching it in," he added. "You won't see a new Portal at retail this Christmas because of that. That's the trade off. People want more, but we don't want to give them more of the same right away because that would just be boring."

"I think you have to be ambitious. For us, that's really paid off. Half-Life 2 was the right decision, it was painful, six years and upwards of 40 million dollars to develop, but that paid off. That's our recipe," concluded Lombardi.

Meaning... many years for a new Portal?

Just my Valvetime cynicism talking.

I don't care when Valve releasing a game, after the Half-Life 2 delay I'm immune to all delays or long developments.

Did anyone honestly think we were getting portal 2 this year?

We probably won't see episode three until 2010 after all :(

You're not the only one, I never got upset about a release date since ;)

dressed as a companion cube? anyone have pics of this?

Good.
I don't mind how long it takes, I'm used to waiting for Valve games. But the wait is always worth it.

Besides there are a lot of big games still coming this year to keep me occupied.

No biggie.....I'm still waiting for Duke Nukem Forever.....

I certainly want them to do something new for portal 2, but I would also like possibly some sort of portal map pack or something. I'm sure thats something the community can do itself but a collection of about a dozen or two high quality maps would be quite good and would add a bit to the game. Not something worthy of a portal 2 name by any means but.

Thank god. I could see Ep. 3 in 2009, barely, but I could see it. Probably not though.

Yeah I agree, most of the time its worth the wait.
Just sad we sometimes wait years for a game only to finish it in a couple of hours once its released, thinking about how you have to wait again for a couple of years for the next release.

I believe 2 different teams are working on Portal and Episode 3. Don't worry about it.

I thought they had integrated the Portal backstory into the HL2 narrative because they intended Episode 3 to include the Portal device ... meaning, perhaps, that Portal 2 and Ep3 are one and the same? It seems to me that that may be what is being hinted at here.

Exactly my thoughts. Valve ALWAYS puts forth amazing effort developing their games, and if it takes several years to create one game, so be it as long as it is worth the wait, and with Valve, it has always been worth it.

All of the games are definitely worth the wait, but if Episode 3 is gonna be released in 2010, I dont think I can wait that long.

Portal is understandable, it was short but fun last year.
So Im guessing they're gonna improve the length and gameplay.

I heard that there is a fairly big release in 2 days. Something about cars.
