Hey guys...

I'm rather annoyed today, I've spent the better part of the day trying to finish building my friend's computer since we got the last few parts this week.

I've built the entire computer myself and it's been working fine for the most part up until today. I noticed a few quirks when it was running before but I originally chalked it up to a faulty video card (an old card I had laying around).

Here are the specs:

Athlon +2000 XP
Motherboard: ECS K7VTA3 (no onboard video)
Ram: 1 stick of 256 3200 DDR.
Video:
Old card - Random intel videocard.
New card - Rosewill Radeon 9600 (brand new from newegg)

So here's the problem guys. When I initially set up the computer I noticed something strange that has never happened to me in my history of building computers, when I installed all the hardware and finished installing windows the videocard would work great, I'd have a chance to install all the drivers and they would work fine after restarting the system. However, the problems started when I shut down the computer for the first time and then tried to turn it on again. It seems it would randomly choose whether to boot up or not, no post beeps could be heard and the monitor would not get a signal. I ended up "fixing" the problem by turning off the computer for a while and turning it back on, most of the time it would boot up just fine.

The computer seemed to be working in tip top shape again for a few weeks until today, when the new parts for the computer arrived and I decided to finish building it. I installed a new 60GB Hitachi HD and a Radeon 9600 as described above.

Everything went smoothly, I removed the old HD and the old videocard, installed the new HD and seated the new video card into it's AGP slot and then proceeded to partition the new HD and install windows. Keep in mind that I was using the new video card as I did all this and it was working just fine. I installed windows, installed the mobo drivers, installed the video drivers and the audio drivers. It asked for a restart and it restarted fine and in color (which means the video card was working). I proceeded to install the last piece of hardware which is a wireless network card onto the computer, after this the program prompted for a shutdown and I clicked yes. This is where the problems started.

After the computer shut down I hit the power button to start it up again. I was greeted by no POST beeps and the monitor saying it was in powersave mode. At first I thought it might be the monitor, so I brought over the monitor I'm using at the moment (it works) and tried it on the new computer. I start it up and it says "No signal".

So I think it might be the mobo or the RAM, I tried the ram first, I reseated it into a different slot and no go, still won't boot up (let me add that the computer does power on, leds, fans and HD all work fine, just monitor won't get a signal). I then think it might be the motherboard, maybe It's been fried or something so I proceed to put the old video card back in to see if it works. To my surprise, the computer boots up normally and windows starts up.

So I chalk the motherboard off the list and think "maybe the videocard is faulty". I try putting the videocard into my current computer, sure enough, I get no signal. I take the videocard I normally use on my PC (what I'm using as I type this, a Radeon 9600SE) and seat it into the new computer to see if it works there. No go, I get no signal from the monitor there. I plug it back into my computer, the card works fine as usual.

So I'm left with a few dilemmas here, I've narrowed the problem down to a few things and I was hoping someone here could help me figure out what's wrong here since it seems to escape all logic.

- The new videocard seemed to work fine up until the point when I shut down the computer, as soon as I shut down the computer the card stopped working.
- My 9600SE doesn't work on that computer but it works fine here.
- The old video card works fine on the computer and the computer works normally (which rules out the RAM, mobo, CPU and HD)

I think it might either be that the power supply is either not powerful enough to handle the card (although none of the cards plug into the PSU, they're the version that take the power straight from the MB) or that the video card might simply not work. What puzzles me is why it worked when I was installing windows up until the point of shutdown, from which the card stopped working.

What do you guys think? I'm really puzzled by this as I've done almost everything I can to make it work to no avail!

I'm thinking psu or mobo.

Are you sure you have the latest agp and chipset drivers for the mobo?

That would be something to check first.

Well I double checked the mobo manual and it says it supports AGP 2.0, checked the card and says it supports AGP 2.0/3.0

I'll try downloading and installing the latest agp and chipset drivers and see if that helps, I'm puzzled as to why the card worked prior to shutdown and then stopped working though. It won't work on my computer either but my 9600SE has no problem here at all.

Tried new AGP and mobo drivers, tried newest cats, nothing, still getting the same problem.

its your motherboard! i got the same prob and my pc is at a repaire shop... they changed my motherboard and it was working fine when i went to the see the work progress

I had exactly the same problem you have. Exactly.

I sold all the parts to my mate. One stick of ram was faulty, as was the cpu and mobo. But i fiddled around with it allot and that was probably why also.

He swopped the cpu, ram and mobo... and it still doesnt work, the only parts that're the same are the psu and case now (aswell as optical drives).

So unless he ordered a dud motherboard, (he knows the other parts work) we dont have a clue as to what the problem could be. My mobo had no onboard video either.
So i'm sorry, i cant be of any help but i had the same problem. Took my pc to a repair shop and they gave me a shoddy service, said they'd find the cause of the problem for me. Said it was the motherboard, I replaced the motherboard and it still didnt work... bastards.

Dont trust a pc shop to do you any favours in way of finding out the cause of the problem, unless you're prepared to pay them £50+ i'll tell you that for nothing, wankers the lot of em.

my thread i wrote about this is here; http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=69698

Before you start spending alot of money on new CPU's, motherboards and PSU's, try replacing the parts with ones that you know work, one by one to see if you can narrow down the search for the faulty part. Then all you have to do is replace it and you should be ok!
