NO sound at all!

Seems like alot of gamers have problems with their sound. I have a regular 4.1 speaker setup. When i start HL2 i have no sound at all. When i change my audio setting in HL2 to 5.1 i do get choppy sounds. Please help

My specs are

Asus P5GD1 onboard ALC861 Realtek HD audio soundriver version 5.10.0.5027 (latest)
Presscot 3ghz
512 ram
radeon X700
sata 160GB hhd

It's so annoying, after all the waiting still not a fine tuned game i'm pissed!

Im getting so over this..

My DVD drive refuses to see the DVD most of the time, and when it does, I get no sound at all after the valve logo! I have 5.1 speakers, but I also tried 2 speakers and same result. HELP!!!
