Hi, I have an Acer Inspire 3680 and I had a virus so reformated my drives and started again. I have an Acer resource disc with all the drivers on, so I reinstalled everything but there is no sound and the PCI device has a yellow explanation mark next to it on the device manager screen.
I've read many other posts on the internet with the same problem and have been to many different website to install drivers, but I still can't find a solution for the no sound!!

Can anyone please help!!!

Yellow exclamation mark means "No driver installed for the device, or a hardware issue".

The Windows installer usually assigns genetic driver for most hardware until you personally download and install the specific driver for the hardware.

1) Make sure the sound volume isn't turned off/down, Sound card is disabled, or misconfigured.

2) See if there's any other CD/s, other than Acer recovery CD, Windows OS CD, that you may have overlooked.

3) Visit Acer support page Here and DL sound driver.

Good Luck.

Thanks, I checked your suggestion and still nothing. The old XP I had before I reformatted was SP2 and this new disc I have is SP3, would that effect my sound card??

The problem is the driver at Acer has both XP and Vista versions on it.

Here is how to get your sound working.

open 'Add remove programs' from Control Panel and uninstall any sound drivers that failed to install, if they are on the list. If you don't see Realtek on the list, then skip this step. If you see it, remove it.

1) download the sound drivers for your specific Acer model from the website. (Realtek HD audio)

2) You must burn a CD ROM with this Realtek sound driver on it.

3) restart your computer and windows will say, "found new hardware...", "if you have the driver CD insert it now".

4) click 'install automatically.' Windows will search your CD Rom drive and find the XP or Vista driver and install the appropriate one.

Done. You should hear a pop up balloon sound and the balloon will tell you that, "your new hardware is installed and ready to use."

Thanks for all your help!

I got another windows xp disc but this time it was SP2 and reinstalled windows once I put in my acer resource disc it found all the drivers and I have my sound back now!! woo!

Thanks again

So you overlooked the resource disc? :P

You can still update Windows and DL SP3 from Windows Update page Here.

Good Luck.

You uh, don't have to install from a CD, do you? So long as you can identify the driver's INF file (should be able to extract it to a directory during install).

I'm not sure of another way. That's the only way I got it to work. Well, I used control panel/system/device drivers, update driver.. but windows will prompt for the same thing if it finds new hardware when you restart windows.

I had to reinstall windows if I used the realtek installer. Yeah, it's that bad. There are programs that can remove broken crap like that, but it was a new XP install with another botched installation of some patch anyway, so I wiped it.
