No text (also occurs in CS Source)

I have no text within HL2, as well as CS Source. Everything runs smoothly, no lockups. When I start HL2 I can navigate the menu on the left solely based on the sounds (I can hear when the mouse moves over "New Game" etc.) Once in the game the "boxes" are all empty where there should be text inside. Hoping for an easy fix. Please advise, and thanks in advance.

Dell Inspiron 8500, P4@2GHz, 512MB RAM, GeForce 4200 Go (64MB), XP Pro w/ SP2, DirectX 9.0c, Tried many different video card drivers from Dell as well as NVidia.
