No text in menus, crashing

Hi, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 8500 (laptop) 2.4 GHZ with a GeForce 4 4200 Go, 512MB RAM, etc.

The problem I'm having is that the menu has no text whatsoever (can't see "Play Game", "Options", etc) -- but even when I do hit enter and get into the game, the sound is jittery and the game locks up after about a minute and I have to manually reboot.

I've downloaded all the latest drivers from Dell, but when I run the game Steam still tells me my drivers are out of date.

This machine ran Doom3 perfectly fine, so I wasn't anticipating any problems with HL2.

i have the same excact machine and the same exact problem execpt i can't even get into the game..it just sits at the menu with no links and then goes to a black screen and i have to manaully reboot my machine

i installed the omega drivers from www.omegacorner.com and HL2 works great.
