No X700XT ATI replaces with cheaper faster 12-pipe X800

source: http://www.hexus.net/index.php

"The bean of the morning is that after consolidating its high-end position with the release of its RADEON X850XT Platinum Edition (read more about our take on this product later today) ATi is set to dramatically strengthen its position in the mid-range sector with a shock decision to drop its recently released RADEON X700XT.

Yep - the strategy seems to be to replace its X700XT – a competitor to NVIDIA's well received GeForce 6600GT – with a 12-pipeline RADEON X800 (possibly a RADEON X800 XL variant) featuring a 400MHz GPU core and 500MHz memory clocks, and ship it at an aggressive price-point, thereby enabling its AIB partners - such as Connect3D and GeCUBE - to supply to the channel at $249 or, probably, much less.

If this pans out, then the bottom line is that consumers of 3D gaming accelerators have never had it so good, for so little money."

ATI just declared war against Nvidia.

This should be interesting to see what Nvidia does in response. Especially since Nvidia has no plans for a mid-season refresh.

Hmm. Interesting. Too bad I've already bought a videocard, since we might see some good prices coming our way.

Well if this happens we all win.Thank god for compitition

They declared war a long time ago. ATI is determined to win at all costs. They don't care if their profits are slimmer, they want to be #1, and they are. They control most of the market, so they win by volume. Their strategies are working. Nvidia has some good strategies too, and makes good cards too, but they have lost the throne. The radeon 9xxx series kicked the FX series ass, but it's getting a lot more heated in this generation.

I don't expect to see an Nvidia response. I mean, they have SLI. With SLI they can technically hold the high end, but most reviewers will compare individual pieces of hardware for performance so they'll still say ATI has a better video card. Of course if you have the money, SLI will give you better performance. The reql question is, when is ATI going to do SLI? Nvidia focused on the incredibly high-end while ATI focused on the middle, maybe that's why ATI is winning. They target the larger audience.
