short answer: run the game with -32bit command in the launch options section (right click the game in steam)
My experience:
I have vista 64 ultimate, recently installed the orange box. TF2 is awesome btw (and ran flawlessly out of the box). Decided i would play HL2, when it starts it says 64 bit mode at the top of the screen so i think, cool. Then when i start the game i got the node graph error which stayed on, eventually (during the chase scene) the AI was disabled message appeard and i couldnt get attacked and rescued.
I typed the error in google and found many posts here mostly full of people accusing others of pirating copies and resurecting old threads, i'm sure this is a problem but you should consider that a game is only as good as its community.
Found the tweakguides version of HL2 and decided to try the 32 bit command line and it worked like a charm.
So Half life 2 64bit version with vista 64bit appears to be broken.
