Noobie: HL2 Mods not working

Hello!

I have running Half Life 2 that I downloaded from Steam account.

My PC is a 2.8ghz Core 2 Duo, 6 gig of ram, 250 gig HD, nVidia 7950 GT graphics card, running Windows 7 64bit edition.

HL2 runs great!
I even downloaded Rock 24 is played great!

But, when I download a MOD that all I need to do is place the folder containing the MOD in my C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods,
and then restart Steam, the mod does not work.

Some of the MODS's I have downloaded are HALF-LIFE 2 SMOD and MM_Mods (a weapons MOD)
Both of these do not work...meaning SMOD does not come up on the menu of games to choice from and the MM_MODS do not provide extra weapons, like a Sniper Rifle or Flare Gun.

Could someone help a Noobie out?

The usual mistake people make, is extracting the mod from it's zip / rar file and placing it the folder in the sourcemods (with the actual mod folder inside that folder).

So if you have smod in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods\Smod, check inside that folder. If you have a single folder called smod or something similar, take it out and put that directly in the SourceMods folder.
