Not again!

Problem of the times - at bootup, the main PC gets stuck at "Detecting IDE drives". Then, after 2 minutes, it'll detect all drives but the hard drive, and ask to boot from the CD.

Before I open it up and see if any wires are loose, i'd like to ask if there are any conceivable software problems that could cause this. The PC was fine when I turned it off last night, and I havn't installed any new software since a week ago. It's been running fine all week.
