I was surfing the internet today when I realized at gamespot.com that Shellshock Nam` 67 went gold yesterday and is being shipped today which shows how quick gold to ship can be. :cheese: Can anyone say September 30th? :O

Shellshock Nam '67 is indeed an immensely popular title. I'm sure they had the CD-Burners on overdrive for that one.

Actually what he is saying is true to a small extent. Games can go gold and be out in a week. It all depends on the Production centers size and capabilities. Most mainstream titles take 5-15 days from gold to ship date.

I do not expect HL2 to go gold and ship the next day though =p Especially if they are looking at a simultaneous world wide release.

"The day after it announced ShellShock: Nam '67 went gold" does not mean "The day after it went gold". It probably went gold a few weeks ago.

Half-life 2 will probably take a little longer than a day to ship after going gold. :p

incorrect, the game went gold quite awhile ago, the whole game was available to download on the 2nd of september (10 days ago) in the format of a dvd image. therefore there is no way it only went gold yesterday.

I've never even heard of it....

you say it's a popular title? :hmph:

It was announced as gold yesterday.

that however does not mean it whent gold yesterday.

Developers regularly hold back the gold announcement.

so their goes that niave theory out the window.

yeah actualyl the reason why it went gold and shipped so fast was becuase they only had to make 5 copies and send them to two stores.

That game has been out here in Australia for a few days now, its release date wasnt originally till the 22nd or something of this month, but its in shops now. So i fail to how it could of gone gold in the past week or two letalone yesterday.

Oh and im pretty sure its a succesful title too.

i think half-life2 will be similar IMO

about the GOLD/RELEASE thing

Please do your research on these things people. Nam/Shellshock actually went gold about 2 months ago, but the game didn't come out a couple weeks after then because the publisher wanted to wait because they thought that the marker wasn't ready for the game... or because they wanted to make more money during the gearing up for the holiday season madness! And about that announcement the other day that it had "just gone gold" and then came out... the going gold part was a lie cause it had already happened, but the release was true.

Sources would be Gamespot.com and Bluesnews.com and any others I might be forgetting.

the article goes on to warn not to expect the game's release until September, citing a soft market and a traditional summer slow season as the reasons for this unusual move
It's annoying how publishers have the power to do that. Exactly like Vivendi did with Condition-Zero. Gold then released 5 months later.

Oh yea, that was one of the most dastardly things a publisher could have done; postpone the release of a hotly anticipated title by 5 months!! rediculous! Those greedy bastards should all be shot! There really need to be some major overhauls done on the whole publisher/developer front. Steam should show perfectly clear the situation between the two.

i still think VU have their finger in steam....we don;t know the contracts tterms between them....do we? (if anyone knoews, and have source plz link :afro:)

Man, I hate to point this out, but everyone seems to be operating under the misconception that there will be a boxed worldwide release. THIS IS WRONG.

The worldwide release is over steam. Boxed copies may take significantly longer to get there.

Actually brokenjago, I do believe Valve have confirmed a worldwide box release. Why wouldn't they do it with such a massive title?

What is a boxed release?

It's the version of the game that will come in a box.

Don't expect Half-Life 2 to be manufactured and shipped worldwide within a day, or even a week. It could two or three weeks, possibly longer, to ship the copies out.

hm i really really really hope that doesnt happen.....

The copies aren't shipped in one day, it will be like all world wide releases. The game will be manufactured, boxed and shipped to stores throughout the world about 7 - 10 days before the release date. The stores will hold on to the game until release, and everyone releases at the same time. This happens with most major releases, although it doesn't always work well, like with Doom 3. Heaps of stores were selling the game early (before release) and for some reason the UK didn't get the game till about 10 days after the rest of the world, which is unusual. New Zealand got the game on the 3rd just like USA.

CS:CZ wasnt held back 5 months waiting for the right time to release it.

It was held back cos it got slated by PC Zone in an exclusive review, they gave it something like 50% saying it was CS with new maps.

next thing that happened was a misterious delay and the game comes out completely different from the version PC zone reviewd.

This is AFTER that one. CS:CZ got slated in the summer of 2003, Valve got Turtle Rock Studios to help make a better version, which went Gold ~November 2003. It didn't come out until March 2004. That's 4 months delay. Though I don't see why it was a good idea to delay it until then, it came out in the same month as Unreal Tournament 2004 and Far Cry.

Now that's what I call bad timing .. CZ didn't actually look quite as good as UT2K4 and Far Cry :p Let's just hope HL2 gets released before Unreal 3.

HL2 still needs an ESRB rating before it can go gold, correct?

Maybe, still pretty uncertain at this point, but you have a valid arguement, somewhat

maybe we could email valve and ask them how long it would approximately take to release after the gold announcement

by the way Shellshock has been out in the UK for a couple of weeks

The game will ship in september. As an example : Tiger Woods 2k5 ( which is multi format btw ) went gold today and is shipping on the 20th, if EA can go from gold status to shipping within a week so can Valve. The November speculation is a joke !

You're forgetting that Half-Life 2 is planned to be a worldwide release, and will be expected to sell a lot more copies than Tiger Woods 2K5. This would mean that not only will shipping take longer, but the manufacturing will take a LOT longer (due to not only needing more copies because it's highly anticipated, but also because it needs to ship worldwide on the same date). Then you have to factor in Steam, Vivendi possibly delaying the game until more profitable market dates appear etc., and things suddenly become a lot more complicated.

Well, i sincerely hope you're wrong. Me ? I'm an optimist and it would'nt surprise me if they'd started manufacturing already. Valve owe us big time and ' they know it '.

Jesus christ, I thought all the optimistic HL2 fans were wiped out! :O

No, we've gone into hiding and formed an underground movement, writing a thread here, a post there. We dare not show ourselves too much for fear of total eradication. I may have already said too much...

Viva October!

its funny how pple compare the gold status and release of other games to HL2 while not even considering the anticipation factor.
anyway u summed it up quite nicely regardless of what pple here want.
