My specs:
Pentium 4 2.8ghz w/ 800fsb and HT
1024megs of RAM

Simply put, i AM going to blow 200 dollars on a new graphics card (my current is an Nvidia Quadro), strictly in terms of HL2, would I be better off w/ the Radeon 9800 Pro 128 or with the Nvidia 5900?

It a lot of benchmarks I've seen the 5900 ranked higher in fps, but Im really just looking for a simple answer here.

The benchmarks you probably are seeing aren't mainly DX9 games. 9800 pro simply and totally outperforms the 5900 card in DX9.

 It's a fact that teh 9800 Pro pwned any FX line of cards. Besides, Half Life 2 most likely work on 9800 Pro than a FX 5900. Is the x700 an equivalent to the 9800 Pro they are about same price right? If that is so, get the x700, or the 6600 GT, og god I dunno BA JESSSSUES! SO MANY GRFX KARDZ!

Oh wait is the x700 only for PCI Express? Ah well.

It seems to be general knowledge that the fx line is pretty crap overalll, i.e the shaders. I would go with the 9800 pro since I doubt the 6800gt will fall within your price range :)

The x700 (AFAIK) is en par with the 6800gt and should cost about 250$... Follow these 2 cards, another 50€$£ wont hurt that much - the gained performance is welll worth it.

agreed.
do not waste money on any of Nvidia's FX line of cards.
ur better off spending a few more dollars to get a card that will give solid performance.

FX cards have the worst dx9 architecture ever. they are simply a geforce 4 ti, with slightly higher core. yes yes yes it out performs the 4 ti, but the 4 ti comes bloody close imo, when you want high fps in dx9 games.

get the 9800pro!!! i had an FX 5600256mb (ahahahahaha) and got a 9800pro because i couldnt handle playing a slide show anymore.

prices for the 9800pro are really low nowadays, and fx5900 is even lower (just goes to shows how sales are getting desperate for the 5900). dont make the mistake, get the 9800pro and enjoy hl2 etc etc the way the developers meant you to :E

......?

x700 is against 6600. It looks like the XT version will be better than any 6600 card. And x700 XT will cost only $200 so I highly recommend you to take that one. Allso its better than 9800 XT

Get a 6600GT. Or X700XT but they may not make AGP versions.

x700 will only be a PCI-express card at first though. It'll probably a while (>6 months) before we see an AGP version.

That aint true, the 6600 GT did (slightly) better then the X700 XT in most benchmarks.

Found one review:

6600 GT beats x700 xt only in doom 3 and on the stress test with no AA and AF but with AA and AF x700 XT beats 6600 GT (AA and AF is more important).

Allso x700 xt is a good overclocker, beats 6600 gt on doom 3 when overclocked.

Looks like x700 xt is better choise after all :upstare:

Thats one of the only reviews that has those results tho, in the others its different.

Here are some of the other reviews I saw to proof im right.

Anyways, my conclusion is that both cards a good buys, tho the Geforce 6600 GT will prolly be the better choice cause it has a confirmed APG version coming up(doubt many ppl got a PCI-E mobo yet, and it has SLI technology so.

Go for the 9800 if you want to play a smooth game of Half life 2 :)

Wait for the 6600 GT, or the X700, i think its coming on AGP. You will get better graphics and its cheaper.

I wont start a new thread for this, but Ive got another question then about the Radeon 9800 Pro 128. Now Im in the process of shopping around, can I trust what I see on pricewatch?

On ATI's site, and Best Buy they are selling for 250 dollars. At pricewatch it looks like I can get the same chipsets for roughly 200... any suggestions?

However in this review, the 6600GT beats teh x700XT in everything but Far Cry, the VST, and some of UT2004. However it is very notable that in Far Cry with 4xAA and 8xAF the 6600GT beats the x700XT, with 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF it DOUBLES the x700xt's fps. I found it strange, but check the benchmarks.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure there will be no AGP version of the x700XT. Maybe for those experienced overclockers the x700XT is the better choice, but for stock speeds I'd say 6600GT.

forget it........it gets very confusing when the cards get different scores in different reviews. Won't trust any of them.

But 6600 GT is nothing wrong with

there is NO agp version of any of the x700's, im pretty sure. and there is no need to overclock them, they will run games perfect.

and the 6600GT IS overall better than the x700xt. last i heard the x700xt was priced at $250....

You know what else surprised me is in some benches the 6600GT beat the 6800nu. I'd still say the 6800nu is better though.

nah, 6600GT is a lot smaller and takes less power and gives off less heat...for about the same performence
