Alot of people are slagging off Nvidia saying that there latest cards wont run half life 2 as well as ati's witch (sorry cant spell) is true but if we look at doom 3 Nvidia's cards are supposed to run this better or as good as ati's and doom 3 looks really good graphicaly just as good as half life 2.

dont sweat it, by the time Hl2 is released Nvidia and ATI would have merged and the pink people on neptune will be pumping out the new "Nvade IT" chip.

but seriously, although ATI is the prefered card as it can handle the new dx9 components with hardly an impact to fps.
Nvidia will be fine with their next line, and your current card will run hl2 fine in Dx8 and you wont even know a bit of difference.

:)

d3 is opengl, nvidia runs opengl much better thna ati. unfortunately for nvidia, directx is probably the api of choice into the future, (although if d3 is huge, maybe not...). in general, the newest generations of vid cards aren't that divergent in performance under directx, but ati does have an advantage. supposedly, though, valve has optimized the code for the generic directx code path, but considering the launch agreement and whatnot, maybe they're more in bed than that.

also, i could be talking out of my ass, you have to consider that possibility.

I say lets worry about that bridge when we cross it.
I dont quite (unfortunately) expect Hl2 anytime soon :(

look what has become of my optimistic friend... :x

not sure if this is on topic but since i will be getting both games, i hope (the future) does not turn into a "if ur a hardcore doom fan than Nvidia cards are for u but if ur a hardcore half life fan than Ati cards are for u" ultimatum.. i was first introduced to FPS games through doom so theres a special something about the doom series for me..

but when half life came out, it pushed gaming limits and it was easy to love this game.. i just hope these companies don't make us gamers choose.. hopefully all cards perform at a decent level and make both games look good :)

I'll be running HL2 and Doom3 on my Voodoo Banshee :)

sir I am very optimistic ;D
I just shroud my optimism in pessimism...
however that way when my true (hoping it comes out this month) wish happens, I can be extra happy.
:D
:D

btw, long time no see bro.

lol, optimism at it's finest if you're hoping it'll come out this month :)

I'm still hoping for next month.. but it's looking less and less likely, but.. VALVE WON'T LET ME DOWN!

It's too bad my Banshee no longer functions in games, freezes within 2 minutes of loading any 3Dapp.. oh well, it's stowed away under my bed with all my other useless computer parts

I have considered it and decided this is my best bet.

No way man, I remember running JediKnight Dark Forces II at 60+ FPS with everything at max detail on a 333MHz! Now I could probably get 600FPS, but what's the point? =(

You remind me of something I once read or heard.

I enjoy being a pessimist. I am always either being proven right or pleasantly suprised.

Ermm Doom3 runs better on ATi cards, the only reason why nvidi's cards get better frame rates is because the precision is turned down because the cards couldnt keep up and frame rates was v bad...

I read alot about graphics cards.... and tech engines so sue me...

..you sure about that? Last I heard, the OpenGL API runs better on nVidia cards, and since D3 is OpenGL based, it'd run better.

Not to mention nVidia and iD are partnered for D3, just like ATi and VALVe are for HL2.

maybe we should have a DoomIII thread, and one just for ATI vs nVidia, somewhere for the mods to put threads like this :p

A Doom3 forum on HL2.net.. interesting idea! Doubt it'd go over well, though..

I GOT A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN STICK THREADS LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!

Looks like ATI is the way to go if you need a new card now.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/fx5700ultra-9600xt.html

quote from the review

So, we have run the benchmarks for you to see the results. The new VPU from ATI Technologies is feeling confident in most currently available games. I can’t say the same about the new GPU from NVIDIA. However, the NV36 has its chance in OpenGL games as well as in games with poor textures but complex geometry. Besides that, this GPU shows good speed when no full-screen anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are used, as well as in high resolutions. However, this largely depends on the specific application.

The matter of price can be waved aside – both cards cost about the same amount of money. As for pure usability, the ATI RADEON 9600 XT looks advantageous, too. It takes less space in the system case, produces less heat and noise and requires no additional power. The GeForce FX 5700 Ultra may be interesting to people who are not much into gaming as well as for those who want to have a graphics card with two DVI-I outputs. And of course, all hardcore fanatics of NVIDIA may find the GeForce FX 5700 Ultra an interesting solution for $200. Although our card had only one digital output, there will surely be a model with two of them in the market. The owners of a GeForce FX 5600 Ultra may find themselves behind the times – this GPU may not be able to run the upcoming DirectX 9.0 games properly.

For those of you who are looking forward to the release of such games as Half-Life 2 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Oblivion Lost, but who can’t afford a high-end card, the RADEON 9600 XT may suit just fine. The owners of the RADEON 9600 PRO may not bother much about the new VPU. Instead, they can try to overclock the graphics core, because the main difference between the RADEON 9600 XT and the RADEON 9600 PRO is the operational frequency.

If you can hold out to March or April of next year then it might be another story.

By the way ATI catalyst 3.9's released expect a whole new round of reviews.

Isn't it just a bunch of bug fixes?

not even a handful of bugfixes...
I dont see how it constituted a driver release.. they didnt fix any of the major issues that were present in 3.9

ah well.

Nvidia runs opengl usually better than ATI (with a few exceptions) although D3 also uses shaders and as you can see from that xbitlabs review (9600xt vs 5700) Radeons shader performance is tops.
Then again nvidia cards are said to render dynamic realtime light slightly faster...Guess we shall have to wait and see.

Hmm... I'll download the new 3.9's and test 'em with my 9800. I'll see if any of the bugs are fixed (from the 3.8's) and see if there are any performance gains (hopefully no losses ;)).

What about the exploding monitor bug!? lol, unless you've been running the 3.8s since you got your 9800.. I'm still a little worried about that so-called bug

Exploding moniter bug....?
is fake, 182 out of 184 cases were made from the same guy ;)

as for nvidia and doom3, Carmack himself has said that they needed to create a special path code for nVidia cards (like in hl2) that uses mixed precision or toned down (just like hl2)

GF-FX using full presicion = really shit frame rates
