Sorry I know theres an existing topic, but I'd like everyone interested to not miss this:

If your annoyed about this sudden news, (3 weeks before it's supposed to be released) do what I did and call ZeniMax Media and let them know this is absolutely unacceptable.

Phone: (301) 926-8300

Press 5 to leave a voicemail.

Calling and leaving voicemails will accomplish exactly zero. The game is delayed just like countless other games have been in the past and countless others will be in the future. If the developer needs more time or the publisher feels its not the right time to release, then there is precious little we, as gamers, can do but wait. Save your minutes or try this instead:

Monica Lewinski is selling her handbags over the internet. Talk to her media rep at: (212)802-8290.

Ummmm, actually they did the RIGHT thing...

Sure you could call them and cry and whine that you won't get the game sooner, but would you rather have a crappy game that is "on time" or an amazing game that is "late"...

Trust me, a year down the road nobody will remember these delays (unless they get insane media coverage like HL2, STALKER, and DNF) and they will only remember the quality of the product...

This will accomplish absolutely nothing but encourage publishers to rush their games more to meet the demands of consumers who cry to them on their voicemail.

Indeed. I am totally happy with their decision to delay and work on Oblivion some more instead of rushing it out for an early release. These kind of things will only make games better.

They never really set a proper date did they? All the game sites have one, but that doesn't mean crap.

I heard its coming out on February 1st 2006, I forget where I heard it though...

We don't even know the reason for the delay.

Yes, its likely they want more time to work on the game but it could be a marketing strategy, although I don't understand the motive if thats the case. You would think they would want to release it in time for the Holidays, but maybe they don't want to compete with the 10-20 games coming out all at the same time.

Maybe they want to be the only game to come out in February or whatever month they choose. Who knows?

The rumor I heard for the delay was that TakeTwo needed to beef up their financial results, so they are moving it so they space out theri profit (and make them look more profitable to investors)

However, even if Oblivion might be claimed "finished", I'm sure there is always something the guys can work on until 2006 :) Perhaps expand the world more than they planned, optimize more (maybe instead of only 30 FPS they can get it up to 60 FPS), maybe improve the art and add more detail, add more NPC's into the world to make it feel more alive, etc etc etc

I mean as long as they don't do what supposedly happened to Vampires: Bloodlines where they said it was "done" and waiting on VALVe to finish, and then come out and be all buggy, then I will be happy...

I hope that the guys at Bethseda know their stuff though, and won't disappoint!

Either way you can be sure Oblivion will kick everyonws ass.

The most likely reason is because they are trying to get it to actually run on X360. The last time it was shown (X05) it was not running well,i heard about draw distance problems, "frame-rates dropping enough to affect gameplay" and more technical issues.

You sir, are a fool.

One of the devs posted the reason it was delayed.

So Todd and I were talking last night and decided that we, or I, should post something on the forums to try and bring fans up-to-speed on what's up. So here goes.

In short, the game is coming out in early 2006 because it isn't done yet. We still have things that need to be done before the game is released. So we continue to optimize, test, balance, etc. We've already gone way beyond what we did in any game previously in playtesting and balancing this game. Way beyond. But there is work that needs to be done and so development continues to go on pretty much around the clock. We will not put out a more specific date until we are certain we will be ready then. Like system specs, we aren't fans of putting out info that changes later on and only confuses or annoys our fans.

We have a number of site updates planned between now and the game's release that we hope to do on a regular basis each week. We'll do the best we can to make it every week, but understand that sometimes PR/marketing stuff gets in the way of game development and so it has to get set aside sometimes for the good of the game (and the people making it). We'll be updating the Codex in stages, adding new concept art, screens, etc. in the coming weeks and months. We're open to doing another fan interview in the coming weeks as well to let you ask what it is you think we aren't telling you. In short, we aren't holding out on you, we just don't want to be done telling you about the game before it comes out.

We appreciate your patience and continued support and ensure you that your dedication will be rewarded with what we think is the best RPG you've ever played.

Best,

Pete (and Todd)
