ools aren't just for vertebrates anymore. The veined octopus has been spotted lugging around coconut shells to serve as mobile shelters, the first time scientists have observed tool use in an invertebrate species.

Humans living on the Indonesian coast frequently discard halved coconut shells in the ocean, and it turns out that their eight-legged neighbors have been making use of them. Researchers have filmed veined octopi, Amphioctopus marginatus, moving the shell halves by placing their bodies inside the hollowed-out portion, draping their legs over the edges, and bringing the shells along for the ride. When the coconut-carrying octopus feels threatened, it will pull the half shell over its body (or sometimes pulls two halves of a whole coconut over itself), and wait inside their armored home until the threat passes.

I've always known octopi were extremely intelligent. That's a pretty cool finding.
 
Those octopi have learned to occupy coconuts, observing outside threats with ocular senses, peering through an aperture in their newly obtained armored appendage.
 
This will affect their evolution. Weak skinned, higher intelligence. Then the inevitable man/vs. octopus battle.


And that means, we'll need to continue to throw coconuts into the ocean in order to keep them alive. Perhaps.

Now would be a good time to strike, while they are still vulnerable - before they venture onto land and take our coconuts by force.
 
Or as one person pointed out in the comments it could be that the coconuts are the superior intellect controlling the octopus into carrying them around the ocean!

Ha. Or, Humans controlling them - getting sea creatures to clean up after them. Maybe I can get them to take my old TV.

We must appease them now by letting them bring their helmets into fashion shows and such. Only those who submit now will be saved in the OCTO APOCALYPSE!!!!!
 
Something about the thread title makes me laugh. It's like there's been a patch for the universe and this is something RJMC's found in the release notes.

That's awesome. Octopi are one of my favorite sea creatures. Now I really want to get one as a pet so I can conquer the world.

The image could be vastly improved in the spacing of the Pi elements though... they are irregular simply because I wasn't aiming for precision.

If I wanted to take it even further... I could leave 3 pixels of distance between them all.

But nobody would ever get it. :cheese:
