I had an odd problem with my computer about a few months ago and have't really been bothered by it until now, I need my HL2. ;( Anyway the problem is that when you plug in the computer the fan promptly turns on, but the system does not boot up. You can not turn the system on or off with the switch, and the fan will not turn off until you unplug it. I have an e-machines computer with an Athlon 2800+, 512 Ram, and a Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT. Any help?

Is it the CPU fan that starts or the power supply?

I'm tentitively saying it's either the motherboard or the power supply.

Neither would suprise me, e-Machines use utterly shit componants.

I just went through this. I can almost gaurentee that your motherboard is fried.

However you might want to check if it is the PSU or CPU but I would test the motherboard first.

What I found with mine was:

When plugged in the computer turned on but I got no display. All the fans were running and lights were on.

The DVD-ROM did not work when pressed and the HDD did not spin up. However if you unplugged their IDE cables they would work.

I am pretty sure both of them but I'll have to check that, not tonight though because it is already 10:00. I kind of figured that e-machines would be a little cheaply made because they're well...cheap. But it lasted about a year and a half with no sign of problems until now.

I handbuilt a system with a 3200+ and and a good MSI mobo and it failed after 6 months of extremely light use. I would say it was mere chance it happened. Hopefully it will be under warranty (on my board I had a good warranty) and it was replaced very quickly.
