Hey guys, new to half life. Picked up half life 2 when i purchased my pc.

I installed everything and got to play for a little while. Turned off my pc and went to play it again in a few days and steam comes up. and it says "Half life 2 100% ready" I double click it and it says "preparing to launch half life 2"

Then the screen goes black....then back to desktop. It won't do anything. I tried a fresh install and it still does the same thing. Have no clue whats going on. Any help would be great appreciated. Thanks!

if it helps any, I have:

Intel Pentium D *2.8 ghz each*
1 Gig of ram
250 gigs of hd space
ati radeon x1650 pro 512 mb vid. card
windows vista.

Yes, I tried that. Steam comes up and I double click play and it does nothing but go black, then back to desktop

Do you have your latest graphical drivers installed? If so, tried rolling back to earlier versions? Also do you have directx 9c installed?

It worked before, and now it does'nt work. I did nothing different.

Welcome to Vista. And you were one of the lucky ones. At least it worked once for you...

Also, have you just left it for a while? Steam can be a bitch, and just update itself REALLY slowly in the background, before maximising again and letting you continue.

Yeah a friend told me it was a glitch in the game. and you had to go to steam.com and change one of the .bin files in the directory. I dunno though, kinda strange how it worked for a few days, now it does'nt work at all.

I'm afraid I'm going to use you as a guinea pig and ask you to run the Steam Diagnostic Tool (It's from Valve, not 3rd party): steam://support/?Issues=*

I would like to ask you these questions:
- Does it say anywhere that Vista is supported?
- What does it say about your drivers?
- Any other odd problems it says?
