apparently there will be 2 different versions that require a different minimum hardware.

A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:

* A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
* 512 MB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

A Windows Vista Premium Ready PC includes at least:

* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.
* 1 GB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2.
* 128 MB of graphics memory.
* 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
* DVD-ROM Drive3.
* Audio output capability.
* Internet access capability.

they do seem rather steep... 15 gb install and pixel shader 2 support for windows premium...

I meet the requirements mostly. I'm not worried. I don;t know about the Aero2 (whatever that is) and the dvd drive3 (whatever that is).

Check, check, check...excellent bring it on.

I'll be turning off all the fancy effects and services like I have now in XP and hopefully it'll run lightning quick.

I hope Vista will have the classic windows skin. Or a 'classic XP skin'? :rolleyes:

Just wait for the guys over at neowin to crack the skinning engine. ;)

it's called either aero glass (pretty) or aero express (similar to an xp gui).

no idea what the heck dvd drive3 is, i don't think it even exists. :p

the only parts i would say are 'high' are 15gb install and .. well, that's about it.

1gb ram ? ever tried using os x with less then 1gb ? it's rather horrible and 1gb will be the standard by the end of the year.

its dvd drive cubed, and the cubed is just a link to some explanation; it doesn't actually mean anything.

My friend was at E3, and they had some Vista machines set up. He moved the mouse and clicked the start menu, and instantly got a fatal error. This was within 7 seconds of touching the computer. I'm going to wait quite some time before thinking about buying it.

lol, vista wasn't the only thing crashing @ e3, wii's [gamecubes], 360s, ps3s, pc demos (like nwn & others) & so on.. so are you going to wait for all of these to be released for over a year, or 2 before you get them ?

it's a freaking beta, heck, get beta2, it's stable as hell and that's just a beta.

It should be stable as hell, it's an OS that's been developed for the last 5 years.

go do some research, there's been numerous forks and so on to take into account when making a comment like that.

Beta 2 is running very stable for me, I've only had 2 errors. First was NOD32 wasn't compatible so I had to uninstall it (etrust has a beta for Vista which I'm using now) and I forgot what I was doing when it froze up. Other than that, very smooth. Runs Guild Wars fine.

I think most people here should be able to meet:
* A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
* 512 MB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

Thats basically the old classic GUI with no special effects.

Could you tell me what the memory usage is after you boot up and there are no apps loading, please?

(The taskmanager's performance tab)
