I played the first time alright, but then when I try to play again, it tells me the offline mode is not ready , only 99% ready. The screen also tells me the automatic update is not on. What a mess! Is there a new players guide that tells me how to start playing the game without so much hassle? Please help.
Thank you

log into your master acount on your ISP, then connect to steam. It should update it, then you should be good to go for offline mode.

How do I log on to master account? Please be patient!

ISP is just a fancy way of saying whoever you get your internet from. By master acount I mean the one that has administration power over all the other acounts ie. you can change passwords and screenames from this one. If you can download crap from this acount it should be ok. Then when your online, log onto steam by clicking on HL2 execute, this way it will download the update you require for HL2. after it's done updating load up hl2 while still in online mode to confirm the update is working. Then exit hl2 and exit steam BEFORE you get offline. For some reason that'll make it say only 99% is loaded. Then get offline and click hl2.exe again to load up steam offline and it should run.

Turn automatic updates on

Unable to play off-line.

Sorry for interloping into this topic, but like Pablos, I'm new to this method of installing a game. My problem is the same as Pablos, i.e. playing off-line (OFFF-LINE STAUS:Not Ready; Updates acquired:99%. I have the automatic updates on in the Steam menu and I don't know what to do next. Please help.

Many, MANY people have this problem. Steam sucks. :|

Just [CENSORED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FORUM CENSORSHIP COMMAND]

I don't know how to fix it....

If the offline content isn't ready, it usually means it's not been downloaded. You need to launch Steam, log back in and wait. Steam will detect what components are missing and begin downloading them. This may take time, or even 2 or 3 log-in attempts but it will eventually do it.

You'll know when something is happenning because the icon will change in the system tray - from the normal Steam symbol, to a Steam symbol with 3 single dots next to it - and when you hover your mouse over it, it will say 'Steam - working' or something like that.

You were right about launching Steam again and wait which I did. I just clicked on play half life 2 and it started loading the game and played it. One problem though, I don't know how to play it off-line as I have to connect to the internet to play the game. Please advise. Thanks.

Just wait while it says its connecting, and as long as you've connected at least once, it should realise theres no connection and ask if you'd like to use offline mode

Thank you FCBOB

What I also did to solve the problem was restarting the computer. when it restarted, there was a green window telling me there is a connection error and if I wanted to reentry connection or work offline. i proceeded to then lof in to my ISP, without closing the green window. Once online, I then pressed reentry connection and Bingo!
This is a sorry way to be introduced to this new registering and playing system!
At least there are some decent people that take the time to help others like me.
THank you again!

My thanks to all those who contributed to this problem. You're a good and patient bunch, not like some very arrogant and rude people I've come across in some forums. On the whole I'm glad to say that there are much more nice people on these forums.
