I did a breif search, and didn't find an answer to my question, but I was reading another thread about downloading half-life 2 over steam as many times as you'd like (seeing that you payed for it), a reply said that most likely if you are at a friends house and you download it over there, only one of you will be able to play at a time (assuming he was talking about multiplayer). Then a question came to mind, will you be able to play Half-life2 offline? seeing how you can't run steam offline, to play lan or bots.

So my question is, will you be able to play Half-life2 if you are not connected to the internet?

because in the past they said they were going to release a single player only version for people that do not plan to play online or do not have a fast connection, so assuming if you get the regular package it will require the use of steam.

Also, when you buy half-life 1 now, you don't have to install the CD, you can just download steam and enter your CDkey and have access to CS, DOD, HL, etc.. Will the half-life2 cdkeys allow access for all the old half-life online mods, or just half-life2 related content? and if not, will your steam account tie into two cdkeys? or will you have to use two different accounts to manage your games?

If you don't have a connection to the 'net, then just go out and buy the retail version.

It would be hard to believe that Steam would be a requirement for playing offline. What's the point?

Steam has an offline mode now for quite some time. As long as all the content is on your computer then you can play offline.

Wrong, you have to launch steam with a connection, then you can turn it off, and go into offline mode.

You may have to do it once just to do yuor cd-keys and stuf, but if my computer cant detect a connection, then it asks if I want to start in offline mode.

yes, because you have logged in before and that information is stored in steam

so the next time you can't get a connection, it will ask to retry/go offline

if you haven't logged onto steam on that certain computer before, you will not be able to open steam

We don't know yet. But if VALVe makes steam required to be run online, then I think they're dumb. It ruins it for a lot of ppl and the warez people will just bypass it and make an offline version... =/

The most possible thing is that it infact will work offline Valve is well aware that not everyone has a broadband connection so they have to provide a solution to these guys. We still don't know how it's gonna work but it's almost a fact it'll be there, it's common sense if they are trying so hard for this game to be used by lots of people by getting to run in low spec hardware then they are also well aware that LOTS of guys in the HL fanbase still don't have broadband internet

The steam thing sucks because it gets confused very easily with 56k. Saying that there are no actual weird bugs so it looks like it is doing it's job well.

On the HL2 point you'll be able to play it in both modes, it'll be easy

I've seen steam run on 56k, isn't that bad really.

I use a 56k and it is good when playing something already downloaded but coaxing it to get the downloads is tough.

Not any more.

Steam has added an "offline mode", in which any game that's fully updated can be played while not connected to the Internet.

In order to use offline mode, you need only start Steam while not connected to the Internet. Steam will then ask you if you want to use offline mode. It's that simple. Note that in order to be able to use any game in offline mode, that game's content must be fully downloaded first. You can check to see how much of a game's content has been downloaded by looking at its properties page (just right-click on the game's name in your "My Games" list).

Offline mode is useful for LAN games and large scale LAN parties, where Internet connectivity is not practical.

The solution will probably be the same as the one provided for the Retail CZ... you can play it offline (without requiring Steam or an Internet Connection) and you can put your CDKEY in Steam so you can import your local content to a gcf file and play Online... and if you don't delete the "offline" install, you will be able to play offline without Steam...

Edit: the wording is a bit crappy but you get the idea, heh
