How about instead of bitching about it and leaving the site in a hissy fit, we actually do something?

We're a community, so let's act like one.

$0.02.

Thought you said you would close anymore threads like this? Oh well I agree with Ennui that you should stop whining and moaning about this and just try and fix it.

This isn't a leaving thread...

Haven't both me and you Ennui tried similar things in the past?

proper hl2 clan and the DoD Source machinma?

either way

any ideas?

i need admin approval on this, but we might be able to talk to some hosting companies and see about sponsored servers, a DOD:S or HL2DM or CS:S server would be fantastic. We used to have a few.

general increase of maturity among forum members would be nice. it's a privledge to post here, so start acting like it. i'm going to have less tolerance for spam from here on out - so think before you post, guys.

a machinima project would be great but i want no dialogue or anything, just something where we can all enjoy ourselves in some fragging action with vague organization, DOD:S or BF2 i suppose, tho RO could work too.

Yeah, i'd be well up for some serious community work here, god knows we've needed it for the past few months/year (though i ain't totally pure tbh)

Machinima would be the best i reckon, last i heard Qon was editing the BF2 one..or something

Getting some Source game servers would be great too, get me back playing those games

Qon should have the BF2 video we made out quite soon.

Yey, game servers! :D

For HL2.netters only and a Ventrillo server to!

The only problem is the perspective of some of the longer-term members. Because the site is different to how it was in the "good old days" (which is part of the natural evolution of online communities), it now "sucks".

Who makes the community? The members. If you think it sucks, it's your own doing - the site itself has barely changed.

I must say I miss AL ;(

I'm not sure if the recent spate of bannings were all permabans or tempbans, but there's a chunk of the community missing. It's like I came into my local and half the regulars had been barred. Maybe I didn't talk to half of them in the first place, but without those faces it's changed overnight into a new fangled yuppy bar; they were part of the furniture and now that furniture's been moved around. If they're permabans, then I'll guess we'll have to get on with it, but I think permabans are a bit strong for a bit of spam (but maybe I'm uninformed - PM ftw).

Whatever it is, I think a public announcement (not frontpage news but in this section of the forums) would be great to justify the decisions and put on a new reinvigorated front. That way everyone would know about, and hopefully agree with the decisions made and the whole thing might blow over. Simply strolling onto the forums one day to notice a huge chunk of the regulars gone makes me feel like I'm caught in the middle of some Dirty War. I read the Dirty Pete thread but I didn't really see reason for mass permabans, so I'm guessing something happened outside of that. It'd be nice to know just why this happened.

should run the community events - have a sub-forum in General Games for organising games and events and stuff

Most people here play CS, HL2 Deathmatch, some mods, Trackmania...If they knew that people from the community would be able to find and join servers easily it might help. I still remember that Trackmania game against you Ennui, that was cool...

I think someone did something like that for BF2 (a game night or something - sorry dont play so im out of the loop).

I like the idea of organising community events. A weekly HL2.net 'pickup' would be great, where members just turn up at a set time, get randomly divided between two teams and have a great game.

You could even just have everyone turn up at once and find an empty Hidden: Source / Empires / Dystopia / BF2 / Trackmania server to invade.

Maybe someone from HL2.net could approach one of the main games server providers and ask for a fixed timeslot (2 hours or so) on a certain day of the week on one of their less active servers in return for some sponsored ads on the HL2.net website. One less of those crappy ads in exchange for a games-related ad wouldn't really piss members off too much, especially not if they know that organisation is providing the HL2.net pickup server(s).

The sponsored ads is a good idea - im sick of looking at that "fart button" ad or the joke banner or screensavers...Im not interested and if it was something to do with games, there might be something that could spark an interest...

I like the idea of a game night, could bring the community closer and create a much more friendly and enjoyable environment :)

It sucks because not enough people participate.

28 members logged in and 616 guests? WHAT THE ****.

I think the stats are bugged.

I think that might be because (in the UK and Europe) it's around midday on a Thursday so most people are either at work or at classes.

a bf2 server would be awesome, of all the hl2netters on my xfire bf2 is generally the most played game, much moreso than dod:s, cs:s or hl2:dm

great idea, I'd definately play those games again if we had a server. Preferences: DoD:S or BF2

lol, it was Black pete but he sure was dirty, and yes there was other stuff happening behind the scenes

Game servers would be great actually. I've never been able to play against anyone here because I can never find anyone. It would keep the Source magic alive. Not that I'm any good, but I can be amusing at times. But I would love to have a set server to come to so I can get better.

well some would be easy like trackmania...its when it comes to Counter-Strike or something that it gets a little more difficult.

And it wouldnt have to be full games...what about mods as well - i hear empires has been going well, maybe there would be some interest there! Seems as not everybody might have full games but mods would be available to all (assuming those here have actually got Half-Life2)

Or perhaps people think it sucks because 3/4 of the members that made it great have left over the past year making it a completely different site?

Sven Co-op2 would be a laugh when it's released :D
That would be awesome!

Isn't there already a hl2.net CS:S server? If so, couldn't we have game nights on that to start with?

there's a hl2.net clan css server but we don't control it, that clan does

**** leaving.

You guys rock to much. I've probably been checking this site more than ever now that I've left, sort of taken the point of leaving away.

I'm sorry for being a dick, leaving and then not doing, **** it.

Solaris's mid forum-life crisis is over, let's get better!
