OhHolyCrap Resident Evil 5 to feature 2 player coop

I can see the headlines now, "Not only can you kill hordes of black people, but your friends can join in too!"

This both pleases and disappoints me. Co-op is all good for action games, but I was hoping RE5 was going to take the gameplay of no. 4 back to a more atmospheric and solitary RE experience. Creeping about alone is half of what makes these games work. Still, it could be awesome. The cover system i'm not keen on for a game like this. It's hard to say why exactly - it just doesn't seem appropriate, like being able to strafe. In RE you should either be running away, or planted to the floor while the zombies get closer and closer /o\

Co-op sounds great, but cover system? We're talking about zombies here right? A cover system, tons of enemies, bright, open areas, and an abundance of guns and ammo have been mentioned in regards to RE5. Is this still going to be Resident Evil at all? Is it even survival horror? It's starting to look more like Gears of War or Army of Two.

Edit: What Warbie said. They're zombies! What exactly are you taking cover from? Although I would appreciate being able to move slowly (very slowly) while aiming. Not enough to run and gun, but enough to back away from a horde while shooting them, or turning a corner with a gun ready. RE4 was a little clunky in that regard, I would like a way to keep the pace just as slow but move a little more fluidly. Less like a deployable turret.

screenshot looks cool, but what would be killer IMO would be for it to have day/night cycles. so as it gets darker, more weird shit happens.

I'm kinda disappointed that when playing single player, you have a computer controlled teammate. I doubt the AI of that teammate will be that great.

just a rumor so far though.

I should imagine that this cooperative mode will be entirely optional. Either that, or it will be similar to the Ashly buddy system. Although this time your AI partner can shoot stuff.

Like Alyx.

I glad you can do 2 player co-op

I am disappointed that it is using a cover system like every other action game out there

Do you even have any of the platforms that this game is coming out for? Just wondering.

I know you are wondering. You are always wondering about me. You are absolutely obsessed with me.

Resi 4 had a sort of day/night system, but it wasn't a cycle. The ganado's became a bit stronger at night, that's what I remember.

Another Capcom game had a true day-night cycle that affected the enemies, Dead Rising, during night the zombies would become much faster and alert, whereas during the day they would be slow.

I really want a Dead Rising 2 with co-op.

I'm still waiting for an RE where you don't need to kill zombies. Imagine being able to complete the entire game (bar bosses/special events) to get a sneak achievement.

However on topic, at least they're trying to incorporate new gameplay ideas into the same resi that's been out for ages. It's good news.

Seconded.

Take away the annoying telephone (or at least make the calls far less frequent), add a friend or two, and we're talking goty material.

'You get in the shopping trolly with the samurai sword and i'll push'

Hmm, at first the co-op idea sounded great, but the idea of a solitary RE experience is what makes it scary. Don't know about this. It sure better be optional and I will just never utilize it.

And those of you complaining about the cover system, remember that like every great action game from the old-scholl had a cover system--Gears of War didn't invent it nor did it perfect it. Think of Shinobi, Rolling Thunder, Mega Man, or really any action game like that and you will notice the barrels and rocks and pillars and machinery that allowed you to avoid taking damage if you crouched by them and then you could stand again and fire off a few rounds. It only makes sense to put in a cover system, esp. when enemies are hurling hatchets and knives and machetes at you. More realistic and better controlling--can that be bad?

Your teammate will be a (probably) shitty AI then who will be constantly dying, requiring you to risk life and limb to save him.

This can turn out insane, and that's why I'm crazy hyped. As long as they make it flawless, all the cut scenes everything seamless like Gears of War its going to be all WIN!

Initial hype aside, I agree that this could either be a good or bad thing, but the idea of 2 player coop in a survival horror game of the quality of Resident Evil is just way too awesome for me to give a shit. :p

That said, something tells me that putting in a cover system means that there's going to be more enemies shooting at you in this one, otherwise it'd be kind of pointless. This would confirm my earlier observation that some of the zombies in the trailers looked kind of militant. That or they go with the "clean up crew" angle and you get caught in the crossfire, ala our favourite armoured mute scientist. Speculation, you say? Nonsense. :)

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this pans out, if it's not all bullshit that is.

sorta like RE4?

Actually kinda excited for RE5 after seeing 5 modern military-grade weapons in the gameplay video, and know co-op mode, hopefully Capcom doesn't fruck up the cover system/gameplay too bad.
Or make a ridiculous story
Or a virus that never is really explained in how it works.

I wouldn't count on a fantastic and gripping story, but I'm betting this will be the best RE by a long shot.

I guess you can tell by my user name that I'm into this kind of stuff.

I'm pretty hyped. Some people like MGS, some people like Halo. This is my game.

I hope the gore is disgustingly real.

I kinda like the idea, but I wish I didn't have to have an AI fill in.

I think both ideas sound bad. Why are this and RE4 even called Resident Evil?

I didn't know that blacks were an ethnic minority in Africa.

Do you guys forget? This is Resident Evil, meaning, even if there is coop, its not gonna be a blast fest.... In every RE game I've played, ammo conservation is a big deal, and you can't just go around, two guys unloading clip after clip, expecting to have enough firepower when you need it later.

I bet ya'll are worrying for nothing.

It'll probably belike Mercenaries mode, but with the option of doing co-op.

Or even if it is i'm sure it'll be like RE: 0 in that you have lots of points where you two get seperated, etc.

I wonder if they will be zombies or the las plagas guys. Or maybe since at the end of RE4 Ada took the plagas sample there will be some kind of hybrid. Because in the trailer they looked smater than zombies. They were running, and there was that one on the megaphone.

it seems to me that the zombies got smarter and faster in every new resident evil. RE6 will take place at the Olympics.

Oh and cover system is fine as long as they don't base the entire game around it like Gears of War. I mean when playing RE4 there was a lot of times I wish I could shoot around a corner.

If you played Resi 4, it's basically evolved into more in the lines of Dino Crisis series (which is awesome in it's own right). There's almost no 'horror' elements left, it's basically a pure action game. Hell you get 'gold' for blasting enemies which you use to buy upgrades / better guns.

Come to think of it though, I don't see how this is going to work on a single screen. To me, the Resi series has always felt at home as a single player experience and doesn't seem to translate well as a co-op game. I certainly wouldn't mind it as long as it doesn't come at the expense of the single player experience.

Meh, I didn't find RE4 scary despite playing solo, so I doubt I'd find RE5 scary playing solo, seeing as it still uses the same concept/formula with 'infected humans' rather than undead creatures, from what I've gathered anyway.

Also, RE HAS had awesome co-op, REOutbreak 1 and 2 ONLINE was awesome, would have been more awesome if they were ported to PC with full support for microphones.

Anyway, my fav RE remains REMake on the GC, it was just awesome.
