I can get dragon age for £18 and borderlands for £23 and that is a good deal for both of them obviously. I want to try them out cos i've heard great things about both of them but I am not a very big RPG fan (also borderlands having no story did turn me off it abit aswell).

So please tell me is it really worth picking these games up? (BTW this is the ps3 version for both of these games)

I don't really rent stuff tbh. This is why i like demos but neither have them.

Borderlands is a lot of fun, especially if you have friends with the game. After you beat it once or twice, it gets really boring. I'd say it was worth it for 23 euro.

Well that seems okay to me :)

and besides I have loads of games that only get played through once or twice anyway, that seems to come with collecting games :P

I got Dragon Age for $20 and Borderlands at $45 and let me say that Borderlands is much more fun than Dragon Age. Theres too much talking and not enough fighting in Dragon Age and theres barely any plot in Borderlands. In fact they are polar opposites. but yeah Borderlands has multiplayer and therefor is much more fun

I don't like Dragon Age. Yes, it's deep and intricate, but there's no charm in the world at all. It just feels like Oblivion with a lot more plot and dragons. I can't say anything about Borderlands though.

I'd go for Dragon Age.

Clocked in 60+ hours into the game and I can't wait to start over with a new character.
Really, if you liked games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, or anything else by Bioware or Interplay then you'd most definitely enjoy Dragon Age.

Borderlands got stale for me after playing it for a few hours even when I had a couple of friends with me... but then again, I like having an actual story to follow instead of just going from point A to point B without any real motivation other than PHAT LEWT that really isn't that phat once you realize every gun is almost the same just with slight differences.

The only bioware game I have played is mass effect just so you know. I have also played KOTOR II which I know is similar to the first and I did like it (until the problem of the lack of an ending appeared >_>)

and before anyone says it I know I should play KOTOR 1 :P

Oh, I just read your post again and it seems that you want the console versions of these games.

I'd have to say then go with Borderlands, I personally couldn't see myself playing a game like Dragon Age with a controller.

Seeing as I've played neither of them, I'm going to tell you why I will probably never play one of them.

I've sat around the house whilst my housemates played Dragon Age, and I frankly find the game obnoxious. The setting isn't even trying to avoid being generic, and because I'm just generally repulsed by Lord of the Rings style fantasy, I find the game world's quaint races, ridiculous fantasy-celtic names and other token linguistic 'fantasyness' (e.g. Your father calling you 'pup' instead of 'son'. Oh! I'm in another world already!) to be impenetrably dislikeable for the same reasons you might actually fall in love with it.

It's dialogue heavy too and whilst the voice actors seem to do pretty well with what they're given, like so many 'dialogue heavy' games the voice work seems to be this rather rangeless radio-play that is merely a soundtrack to the 'choose your own adventure book' the game actually is. There are dialogue options, not conversations in this game. Everything is delivered in that circa 2000, Deus Ex 'A Bomb!' mode where the characters have a single animation loop and articulate everything about their character by how much their jaw flaps.

It's something people used to the genre will accept, but in a world I already dislike, it just pushes me telescopically away from the story, which even in western RPGs is 90% of the game (actually, in Dragon Age, my friends barely seem to touch the controller once they get into a fight. May be a PS3 specific thing though).

As for Borderlands, it looks kind of interesting, but for all I know it's guilty of exactly the same things.

Ouch that put me off dragon age abit (I also am not too fond of the generic LOTR settings in fantasy but this got good reviews so I thought it may have been different >_>)

I'm also having this debate myself as I want to get a game for xmas and the only big games I don't yet have are DA and BL. Shaker keeps saying to get BL but it looks a bit meh to me. DA interests me alot but, like you, I would be getting it on the PS3 and amn't sure how good the console version is. I'm also not too fond of genric fantasy/orcs n elves stuff.

Dragon Age gets my vote
although I'm not sure of the quality on consoles
Borderlands is worth a look too (rent?)

Borderlands is a load of utter shit unless you plan to play it with friends, a lot.

Dragon Age would be the better buy, tbh

I think after this I might actually get both :P

they're both at quite a good price and i'm interested in both :) (admitedly I'm more confident of borderlands than dragon age atm)

I bought both Borderlands and Dragon Age at $60 and was greatly disappointed by both.

I've heard that if you can you should get DA on PC but if you can't then the console versions are still good enough

Back when I got it my PC was not good enough, but now it is.

I regret not getting it on PC.

Yep Dragon Age is a PC game. Don't get it for any console, please.

This. If you do get it, get it on the PC rather than the console. Yes it will play, but the experience is better on the PC.

Also I recommend DA: O despite it's LotR stylings. I was probably the most skeptical on the forums about it, but I gave it a go and I don't regret it. It's a very tactical game the further you go in and the way it unfolds is quite impressive.

I just can't get into Dragon Age. The gameplay is too slow and detached, and the world is like a teenager trying to convince everyone how grown up and mature he is by dying his hair blue and getting his nose pierced.

"Urgh, I'm so po-faced and there's all this blood and sex. I'M AN ADULT, WHY AREN'T YOU TAKING ME SERIOUSLY MOM?! "

The only real fun I had was as a dwarf noble, because you get to be a complete asshole to everyone in the origin story. It's hilarious. But yeah, too slow and boring for my tastes. If you want something you can jump in and out of quickly and have fun with friends with, Borderlands seems to be the more suitable option (although I haven't played it).

If you're dumb and just want the same generic action that every samey generic shooter gives, then get Borderlands.

If you want a deep, tactical game with great dialogue/plot and that provides a challenge, then get Dragon Age.

I have both, and I can only play Borderlands for ~45 minutes each time before I get bored and quit. Dragon Age hooked me for hours at a time and its provided 70 hours of entertainment. So, even in the bang/buck category DA wrecks Borderlands.

I wanted to see peoples opinions of both games and see if they were worth it, seems like they are overall :)

My PC can't run DA. Lambda, tell me what the PS3 version is like when you get it.

Your decision is really based on which RPG you like better. Dragon Age is for the hardcore heavy-story lovers that find enjoyment in intricate dialogue choices, complex RPG skill-sets, and choices, oh god the choices. Borderlands is more for people who want an RPG with a less-complex skill system and heavy shooting elements. Think about it like this: would you rather play Baldur's Gate (or any DnD game, for that matter) or World of Warcraft?

EDIT: World of Warcraft with GUNS
