Comcast(the only broadband ISP in my area) and they are going to start charging an extra $30 for every PC you have connected to a router. What a horrible idea, it doesn't make sense. Can they even detect it?

Hmm... What if you have a bunch of comps on a switch on a home network?

Are you kidding? I have Comcast and we have 4 computers hooked up to our router.

There's no way they can do that..

Are you sure that's not $30 extra if you're using a hub?

It is any computer hooked up to a router, so I don't know. I got this info from an e-mail but it is on another computer so I can't check the details.

I don't see how they can do that, you sure it wasn't a fraud?

I have Comcast and I got no email. We need the details!

Thats nearly impossible. If I remember correctly, a router hides all of the IP addresses hooked up on a home network. That is why routers are also called hardware firewalls. The only way they are going to charge you is if you tell them you have more than one computer or they physically come to your house. I think you are talking about some sort of installation charge. Read your email/letter again. please :)

routers use NAT, NAT allows the pc's behind the router to have internal ips which allows a whole lan to only use one external ip.

in theory they COULD tell if you have more than one computer, but the reality is it's not practical to packetsniff everyones traffic just to see if they have more than one computer on the network.

and this $30 extra a month is bullshit, you're using one IP, there is no reason for them to justify $30 extra a month.

i think you need to re-read the email and figure out what it actually said.

Just email them with the message " This is BS dude!!!!"

They'll totaly drop it after that.

They might even make you CEO.
Thats how the buisness world works.

That's how I got my first job.

i say thats bullshit... take some dead fish and stink bombs and put them around thare building at night... then leave a note on the door that says F*** YOU!!!!

Xtasy0 is right about NAT. Basicly when you have multiple computers hooked up to a router, the router will assign each connected computer a WAN IP and a LAN IP. The LAN IPs will be 192.168.X.X and the WAN IPs are usuallly the same as if you were using one computer.

How can they charge $30 a month extra for each computer hooked up to your router? You are getting NO additional bandwidth, the bandwidth is split up between the computers and shared. So what are you paying for? Not bandwidth, not IP addresses, nothing.

They can't do that. You read the e-mail wrong.

Right...Comcast posted a profit of 3,240,000,000 dollars. They have cash and short term investments of 5,403,000,000 dollars. If you did that, they would have enough money to buy a small army and then find you and destroy you. That wouldn't be the smartest thing to do. ;(

If this is true then I can foresee a lot of people switching ISP. The business world is funny.

Everything you read on internet is true, even random e-mail massages. You guys didn't know?

call comcast tech support, or do a chat with one of their techs. this gives you an excuse to 1337 5p34k with them. ESPECIALLY over the phone.

"wtf omg omg wtf omgz0r! $30 extra?! fux0r j00, g4b0r iz muh buddz0r h3'11 1337 h4x0r j00 f3r m3h. I R0X0R J00R B0X0RZ!!!11!1!ONE!"

call them and say that DOIT!!!! DO IT!!!

NOW!!!

as umop said, you're using no additional bandwidth, and it is very difficult for them to detect it in the first place.

I'd guess the email is a hoax, paste it here with the full headers when you can :)

Its only $1.00 extra for my house with an extra computer(two actually)

If it is a legitimate message, it is probably more along the lines of them wanting to charge you for each additional computer that is on a hub, meaning that it is directly hooked up to the ISP, meaning that they allocate it an additional IP address.

Comcast cable seems to work this way. My friend has it, and when we come over for a LAN party, we all hook into his hub, and we are all allocated separate IP addresses. These are real Internet IPs, not LAN IPs. However, this is just for a short time. If Comcast notices you using more than one IP for more than a while, they will probably start billing you for the additional IP address, which is reasonable, as it costs them money.

As to whether charging $30 per IP is reasonable, ummm.... I really don't think so, but it's possible. Of course, the way to get around this, as mentioned before, is to use a router, since all machines hooked up to the router would be behind the NAT, and therefore all using just one IP.

Hmmm, sorry to ramble on, but I hope that helps...

Twilight

(Wow, my first post in...ummm...months?)

so what you're saying is....you smoked some really good drugs, then hallucinated that you got the email in question, and then made this post as you were coming down off the high?

Well I don't do drugs....so it must have been....umm..well that sounds pretty accurate I guess.
