I don't know if you can even call them combine... Because I thought that combine stood for combined species or something... So all the slug's creations (combine soldiers, synths, whatever) would be combine, but the slugs would have a different name... *shrug*

The Combine are slug-like aliens so overevolved they can no longer fend for themselves. The Combine is an empire ruled by said aliens using advanced biotechnology to create synthetic life forms for use in blowing shit up.

As Samon said, at the end of the game, Breen is attempting to convince the Combine Advisor to tunnel through from the Combine home dimension so that Breen can escape.

I doubt that there aren't defenders for the Overseers, plus they might have telepathic powers or something, although I doubt Valve'd do that, and Gordon can't breathe on their planet.

In a related topic concerning Breen, did anyone else pick up on Breen's words when he has Eli, Alyx, and Gordon captive? He said that with them in his office, he was in a position to negotiate any deal he chose to make with the Combine. He also states that the research being conducted by Eli Vance could be continued now that they had him. I realize Breen is a deceitful person, but did it sound to anyone as though Breen wanted to negotiate a deal with the Combine that would be to the benefit of humanity?

Further, did anyone else notice Breen's little quirk? He covers his face on the side from which someone who says something he dislikes is standing. This happens when Alyx says, "Don't listen to him, Gordon!" in the office and earlier when Dr. Mossman calls him "Dr. Breen" before calling him "Wallace". This could be a hint at something going on between Breen and Mossman, but it could also simply be a nervous quirk. Any thoughts?

Many people seem to assume that the Gman believes the Combine to be the "bad guy", but isn't it quite possible that the Gman could care less about humanity's struggle and the Combine? I tend to think of the Gman as a type of mercenary who rents Gordon Freeman (and possibly others) out to the highest bidder. Or, perhaps, that the Gman pits Freemand (and possibly others) on a particular side simply to keep the status quo of the universe so as to avoid a sudden power vaccuum (similiar to Earth pre-World War I)?

Just ideas that seemed to fit with the thread's title. :E

Breen is trying to escape Earth so he talks to the combine advisor to earth to get him out of there but like in HL he has to use a rely point in Xen in order to get to where the ADvisor wants to put him.
