Hey Guys,

I know this is kinda a dumb question but I'm desperate at this point. The eve of the Orange Box release, and my soundcard breaks!!!

Sure, I can play the game with subtitles, but Im trying to find a way to get some sound temporarily before buying a new card...

I am no expert on Motherboards, and I dont know what to look for on it, but do all Motherboards have the option for onboard sound? If so, how can I hook up my computer to play audio directly from the Motherboard?

Thanks for any help, Wanted Bob

how did you determine its dead?

also there is no other way except buying a sound card or a new motherboard. also i suppose you can buy an external usb one.

There should be audio ports on the back of the mobo...

how did you determine its dead?

Well, one day it stopped working, so I checked everything. The connections, the volume, that fact that its being used as a default device. Ive also tried all the troubleshooting ideas, switched out the speakers with ones I know work, tried different ports...

Nothing has worked so far, do you think I missed something? It doesnt seem to be the fault of an external hardware. The only think I can think of is sound controls on the keyboard. Is there anyway that those could have messed with my audio (if so how can I reset those volume control settings?)

Thanks for the help you guys.

Will do. I'll probably not get that done till tomorrow though :(

Don't you know if you have onboard sound or not?
Check out this picture. The sound card is at the bottom (horizontal slots). The onboard sound (probably disabled in the BIOS) are the audio outputs which are at the bottom of the vertical section (left of the large fan). If you don't have those then you do not have onboard sound. The green audio would be the front or stereo port.

Uninstall drivers for the sound card. Shut the PC off. Take out your sound card. Turn the PC on and go into the BIOS. Enable onboard sound via the BIOS and save settings. Then when you boot up, Windows should detect new hardware. Install audio drivers that came with your motherboard CD OR go online to the manufacturer's site to get them OR check to see if Windows Update has them.
