Hi ppl.
I wonder if in this "next generation video game" sky will be animated? I thought that i'll see "CryTek stylish sky" but animated! In movies from HL2 they're static;) It's simple ,trees are moving beucase of wind, why sky isn't? :D

Just answer :)

It's something that can be done, but isn't done in HL2!

Weird hey?

ehh i dont kno.

Stalker has amazingly realistic sky but not even that is animated ( i think)

May be because you have to watch it for longer time to see it is animated if wind is slow, and partly because it might be distracting remember sky from Quake?

They can be animated, in fact, they are. I'm not sure about other video's, but I don't know if you've seen the HDR techdemo, but in the background (the skybox) you see the combine citadel moving. Looks great.

You can build the skybox out of multiple layers, you can have cloud layers and pretty much anything you can think of.

I don't know why noone noticed yet, but if you look
REALLY close to the sky at the end of the E3 Coastline Bink,
you can actually see the sky moving.

Only the white clouds move, it's hard to see because
the static skybox and the moving clouds are the same color.

It's hard to see, look CLOSELY :dork:

I personally don't care if the sky is moving or not. Of course in certain games such as MMO's I like to see sky moving, it is part of the game and should be like that.

Sky could look great and not move and still give nice atmosphere.

You know the sky is nice....but I would be more conserned on the gameplay.

You're right in coastline is moving, but for example Docks ? realy nice looking sky, but it isn't animated.

PvtRyan, thanks .

Its about the colour of the sky. Its what gives the game its atmosphere

Dark and forbolding=Danger
Bright and Cheerful=Relax

Look at the water. Calm. That means no wind. That means no moving clouds.

I'm sure they have alpha cloud layers moving and stuff, don't worry. :)

Morrowind had quite nice sky. That was animated and i really think it added a lot to the game...Thats not exactly a new game. Im sure source can handle it, but i don't think they will have implemented it to the full.

I was going to mention Morrowind as well... it looked so real... and thunderstorms were awesome!

Yeah i loved those....I liked the way those moons actually gradually moved over the days...in fact if you stoof there long enough i think you could see them moving in the sky....but it was very slow and its not that you saw them moving, you just saw where they were an hour ago and now you can see them in a different spot.

I'd rather have an awesome static sky than an average animated one. Sounds like an unecessary feature to me unless you're going for non-linear RPG game, like in Stalker or Morrowind.

Operation Flashpoint 2 will have a real time animated sky :bounce: , all times of day like the last version, if you want to buy a game with a realistic animated sky with weather effects :D yay

didn't anyone see the new serious sam trailer for the upcoming serious sam?
the sky was fully animated and moved very nicely

Afaik somewhere in the Valve mails thread someone from Valve confirmed that you could animate the sky, but for some reason we haven't seen this in the movies yet ;[

No, they are in HL2 they're just used more sparsly to reflect real-life conditions. I remember Gabe talking about a moonlit sky complete with advancing clouds.

i wonder if the time set for hl2 will be real time, i mean like the game is supposed to take more than a day to beat right?
like 36-40 or so hours i hear

The preview in PC Gameplay mentioned an animated sky in City 17.

Some of the E3 videos from last year also show moving layers of mist (Striders and Traptown at least).

Even the sky in Call of Duty is good enough for me; anything Valve presents will be great and will undoubtedly blend in with the environment. Remember: It's better not to notice something in the game b/c it looks normal than to notice it b/c its either way worse or way better quality than everything else.

yea that's true, it seems to me that the whole game has gorgeous graphics and cool character models but at the same time doesn't want anything to stand out so it won't feel out of place

i think the atmosphere is the most vital thing, if the sky is bright blue and birds are tweeting because you took a while on the previous level would make wondering through some sketchy cemetery with evil zombie creatures hunting you down that little bit less freaky.
