Online DVD Rental! [New service for the UK]

MSN has recently started an internet service called MSN DVD Rental. Basically you subscribe and create a rental list. Depending on your subscription (between two and five a week) you will automatically receive these DVDs and you can keep them for as long as you like. Once you're done, just send them back and they'll send you 2, 3, 4 or 5 more (depending on your subscription). The subscription starts off with a 14-day trial and if you don't like it then you can cancel the subscription at any time. Free of charge!

Netflix has been doing this for years, and Gamefly does it for games. Its pretty cool.

Hmmm this does look interesting, but i only want to do the trial (i am a tight arse + i can get DVDs for free from my workplace)...they say to cancel it you have to have all your DVDs returned, what if you send one back and another gets immediately dispatched? Will they count that as you having it out and therefore unable to cancel?

They'll only send out what's on your rental list Murray. So if that's empty they'll be nothing to send out. Maybe you should just add two or three to the list at a time. That way after like 6, you know you're gonna cancel, just don't add any more to the list or remove the ones that are on there.

It was pretty cool. I got in on it with my bro except he wouldn't watch his movies so we would have the same movies for like a month.

well I have a question about this service.

the maximum dvd's the allow you to have at any one time is 5 dvd's and say for isntance (hypotheically) I'm a trekkie and I want to rent out star trek: the next generation series 7 (which is 7) disks and they do have in stock... how the hell would this work?

Rent the first five, straight after you've watched the first two send them back; flag the remaining two DVDs as being dispatched ASAP. By the time they're there you'll have watched the first five DVDs.

you mean they dont send you the whole box set? or if its a two disk dvd set you can request to have the movie only and leave the special features disk with them?? seems like a messy way to do it.

Maybe with box sets they do send it out.

But with double disk DVDs you can have the option to have just one of the CDs

So how long do they actually take to send the DVDs with MSN cos I've signed up for a trial (last night) and I just checked my rentals list five minutes ago (understandably they have to actually send the disks, but presumably they would have added them to the 'current rentals' list by now?)

You would prefer Netflix Ghost as you're in the US. I assume they send out Region 1 DVDs which are useless in a Region 2 player like most of the UK have. Likewise unless an American user has a multi-region DVD player, the DVDs from MSN would be useless. I don't think MSN send them out abroad anyway. I guess this a new thing specifically for the UK people.

I signed up Friday and received them on Saturday. Very efficient. I'm returning them tomorrow morning, so really I should have two more by Wednesday.

with netflix, if the movie was on 2 DVDs each DVD would count as a rental

I signed up thursday night and got the DVDs saturday morning... oh and I signed up with the link you gave chris so you should have recived 5 quid! anyhoo, I copie... *ahem* WATCHED the dvd's and returned them sunday morning, so goodness knows when I'll get some more, but theres 34 dvd's in my list and I intend to get my free trials worth

EDIT: Each individual disk does count as one rental, which I suppose on multi disk series is okay, but on films that span 2 disks, or special features disks just takes the piss!
