I've had a katana for about a year now. I'm wondering if anyone knows of some online websites that have diagrams/pictures of how to properly make use of the weapon: how to weild it properly, unsheathing techniques, resheathing techniques, blocking and striking, etc. I'd like to get the basics down.

lol, chances are if you learn your katana techniques from a website, you're gonna loose. Try google though, bound to have something useful. I recommend taking actual classes, preferably from an old, wise, Japanese guy.

what if you play a videogames whit swords?

I am also interested in this, I got my katana so long ago I haven't even bothered to dust the thing off since I got it, maybe learning to wield it would be a cool thing to know.

This isnt for competition. Just personal interest.
I have no interest in "winning or loosing" anything.

And you don't think I've already Googled this?
-.-

You're right this time.
I just googled every possible combination of katana education I could think of.
I found alot of books and schools though.
I don't think they'd teach you how to use japanese steel...over the internet anyways.
Sorry...You should consider a school or book though.

Swordforum

Go to the Japanese sword forum section.

They are quite a nice and dedicated academic community. Although they deal with swords from all periods and cultures, the Japanese sword arts always have a very large following.

They can probably hook you up with a school if you wan, sein as you are in the USA and all.

I thought they were illegal unless they were for ornamental purposes. I was going to buy one when I was in America, but the shorter ones wouldn't have got through customs and the bigger ones would've only got through if it was to be used for ornamental purposes.

personally i wouldnt ask on a computer game forum for references on martial arts

personally I recommend discipline in some form of martial arts first, using your body and mind as a weapon should come first then the sword as an extension.

Thats why this is in "Off Topic" and not like "Games Chat"

Thanks for all the tips guys.

I used to have a paul chen carbon steel katana, had a wonderful hamon on it.
It was RAZOR sharp and i could chop lots of stuff in half.
I found i had no use for it so i sold it to a friend who likes swords and stuff and bought a digital camera with the money.

Why don't you do Kendo or Ninjitsu. Both teach how to use swords. Better that you are instructed by a professional than attempt to teach yourself on the web......

wow so many ppl have katanas, i want one now. a real metal one. hacking and slashing is so much fun

ninjas used ninja-to
Samurai used katana
And i'll correct YOU, ninjas would use katanas....ones they had stolen.

just buy a gun.. jeez. probably as expensive as a good katana, cooler, and far easier.

or just go to a fencing school, or some japanese martial art. they will teach you. i take hapkido, and they teach us swords and knives.. but more importantly sticks :).

I took katana training classes for a month (that was the duration of the course) and I really don't think text would be an apt substitute for wise teachers reajusting your body everytime you make a move. It's insane how much you can miss, you think you have a perfect posture but nooo. Even the basics are extremely difficult.

PS: Use a Boken to train plz :|

not 100% sure if you were being serious or sarcastic, but do you have any recommendations ?

There can be only one!

<lops off the heads of his adjacent thread mates, then rushes everybody else>
