I just played Risk (the board game) with like 6 people for the first time today, and I really like it, is there any online Risk games (MMO) that are out there, and if there are, maybe we can set up a HL2.net game?
I own at dominategame. The game theory behind it has a lot of real life applications. Here's my hints on how to win or come 2nd place most of the time:
At the start of the game don't attack anybody ever. All it does is weaken you and weaken the other person. When there are 6 players this means that everyone else is stronger than you and you will get wiped out. Take your time getting into a continent if you have to.
Being bigger is not better. When you have North America or Europe you get more armies but you are also a big target. If you have a big continent, don't try to defend all your borders, just stack all your armies in one place and if you get attacked let it slide. You're better off seeming like you're not a threat.
When it gets down to a 3 player deadlock Australia is the best continent to have. If you just build armies in Australia, nobody can attack you without giving up the game. So eventually the two other guys will wipe eachother out. If one person is getting too strong, just throw some weight at him to balance the odds. If you don't have Australia, try to pile all of your armies on one spot and then once things start to happen you can move into Australia, or you can just keep piling them up.
Attacking is always bad. Don't attack until the very end of the game.
So basically, camp Australia. Yawn. Any game that requires camping an asset for any length of time is boring. Unless there's flash bangs involved. Are there any flash bangs in Risk?
I play DOminate all the time as well. I've played well over 1000 games.
Mostly it seems like the person that has Australia ends up loseing. People think too highly of Australia. Sure it an easy place to keep, but then you're backed into Asia, and it's hard to break into anywhere else. If you have south America, it's not that hard to get into north America or Africa. When you have Australia, you'll mostly be stuck, unless you have an army somewhere else you can put guys into.
But it's true to take things slow. I'll sometimes be nice to people (move my guys away from them so they can take something) They end up not attacking me when I'm vulnerable to attack, and then I slowly get bigger, and screw them over in the end. That may seem like a jackass thing to do, but there can be only one winner.
