Five advanced technologies available only in Japan include true mobile digital TV (all the regular terrestrial channels at no cost), mobile wallet service (phones have smart cards embedded inside, letting you add applications like electronic money or a credit card), connected cars (with a navigation system connected to a cell phone), primary wave earthquake warning systems, and home-help robots.

When you think about it, that's the main difference in us. Maybe we should start droppin' bombs on ourselves!

Israel is rated one of the top most high-tech countries in the world also. Right up there with Japan. Most of their innovations are for military applications though, like research on...hold your breath, LIGHTSABER TECHNOLOGY! :O It's still in it's prototype stages though, as the model they developed uses an astronomical amount of power. It supposedly can cut a cow in half from what I've heard. :O They've also developed infared keyboard projectors for hand-held devices like PDA's so you don't have to use those damn thumb keys, but instead use a projector device of a keyboard via USB connection. It would be so awesome to whip out a PDA, stand it upright like a miniture computer, then fire up the infared projector keyboard so you can type like a normal human being anywhere you want on any surface. Alas, they aren't for sale anywhere else in the world. At least to my knowledge. If anyone knows where I can buy one in the States, let me know ASAP. I hate watching other people whipping out hand-held devices only to watch them type with their thumbs like some kind of freak. Ugh. I'd wish Israel would sell those keyboard projectors world-wide.

To the OP, Japan is probably the most technical country in the world due to necessity, not money. They are dealing with increased population, environmental, economical, and social troubles. They don't have room for layabouts and bums and therefore they have a very strict and demanding society. That's why their technology has developed beyond other countries. To suit their more demanding needs. Japan also has the highest suicide rate for this reason. You either make it, or you don't. That simple.

Yeah, we have cars that drive around encouraging all the homeless to commit suicide. :hmph:

All this technology and most people pay with cash, so most people carry over $200 dollars on them all the time. A pick-pocketers dream, i tell ya.

Too bad theres no crime. i guess we are too busy working or committing suicide,

I've seen the projector keyboard. Simple technology.

Light saber will never work. Even if you can make it work, you couldn't sell it to anyone.

You could sell it to Star Wars nerds.

Or maybe they'd be too poor - you would have to sell a single one to all of them, and watch them fight over it.

Man, using these nose hair trimmer things really **** up the insides of your nostrils.

the difference is they don't spend like 21% of their money on the military

The one who grabs it first wins automatically, doesn't he?

I don't know, you think you could effectively handle a glowing laser sword against every Star Wars fan in the world?

Yes it would be far too expensive to be feasible, like solar cells, and just as easily stolen.

Meh, we've got 2 of them. Cell phone wallets and connected cars.

Old news :p

Very old.

I know. I'm not exactly Mr. Exclusive these days, but I still can't find them anywhere in the States. You'd think everyone would be using them by now if it was such old news. :p

People do use them. They're just not more popular than standard keyboards. And they're probably expensive.

Yeah keyboard things have been around since like 1997. I considered buying one, but its useless without tactile feedback. You can get one from thinkgeek.com

My answer depends on whether you are serious or not.
Yeah, I'm serious. The Israeli-developed surgical laser. That's the only thing I've ever heard of that's remotely lightsaber-like that came from them, unless Saturos is talking about something else. But if that's what he's talking about, that's no lightsaber.

Ok then, no, at least 3 of us were talking about real light sabers.

Got a link to that? I've never heard of such a thing. I've heard of the surgical laser, and the MTHEL, but that's no lightsaber either. That's a laser spotlight that blasts missiles out of the sky.

This thread was the first I've heard of such a thing. I only posted because I was watching Venture Brothers and Dr. Venture sold a prototype lightsaber at his yard sale, saying how nobody would buy it.

Well I wouldn't have. It didn't do anything; it was a glorified flashlight.

I thought as much. BTW, what exactly is tactile feedback? I've heard people say they wouldn't like those projector keyboards because you can't actually feel the keys, making typing difficult without touch feedback. Is that what your talking about? Also, my main point to everyone else was that Israel was the first to develope these and that they are usually the first country alongside Japan for such innovations, not that they have any revelence in current developing technology. :p Israel is also developing "smart bullets" akin to that gun on that Bruce Willis movie Fifth Element for those that have seen that movie. That'll be interesting too. Ever watch that show on TLC called Tactical to Practical? It's true that most of the technical innovations we have today were originally developed for military applications. At least I believe so.

Much as I love the smart gun, I want to see where you got this lightsaber thing from, elsewise I'm calling bullshit.

Pics or it didn't happen right? :p I don't blame you, though it's gonna be difficult to find on the internets, I got this info from an inside source. I'll work on it and see what I can dig up. ;)

I hate inside sources. Lightsabers belong to everybody! This was the problem with the Jedi.

yeah besides the fact we totally rebuilt their country better than ours after ww2.. lol

BTW, what exactly is tactile feedback?

Yeah, touch is the simplest version. It's when you get a response from the thing you're touching, like the keys on a keyboard. Touchscreens don't give tactile feedback. But the latest Motorola RAZR V2 had a touchscreen on the outside which vibrated when touched. That's an example of tactile feedback. I touch it, and it tells me back that it's been touched.
