With respect to the "how much illegal software to do you own" thread, here is a video I've had since 2003 that I thought I'd share.

Part 1

Part 3

This aired on ABC February 9, 2001, and it certainly makes you amazed at how things have changed since then.

- Napster gets shutdown, partly due to a lawsuit started by Metallica. Metallica thus ruins its reputation amongst some of its large fan base.

- Ares, Kazaa, Limewire, Morpheus, and a bunch other P2P programs are used as alternatives, but not quite as reliable for pure music as Napster once was.

- Bit Torrent becomes more popular among the the more computer-literate looking for a more reliable way to share files.

- iTunes is born and becomes popular (with help from the iPod) after the RIAA (and MPAA to a lesser extent) begins to take legal action against file sharing participants for "copyright-infringement" within the United States and anywhere else they hold juristdiction (not Canada!). In addition to the installation of the Patriot Act after September 11th, some Americans feel overwhelmed with invasion of privacy, and feelings of Big Brother.

- The largest Torrent site available is shutdown in 2004 (it's filtered) after legal threats are made to the site. Its creator, Sloncek, helps develop a new P2P program named Exeem, but it is released with Adware/Spyware and its reputation is tarnished and shutdown in 2005. Alternative torrent sites are used.

- YouTube.com goes live in early 2005, but due to its anonymity is susceptible to copyright-infringement and a few lawsuits already filed in late 2006. In February 2007 Viacom demanded YouTube to take down more than 100,000 videos, all of which are held by MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. One can only assume more are to come.

I think about this a lot, how businesses tend to rather than adopting a new business model to fit the current flow of technology, they insist on using half-century old business models and force the public to obey, to ensure their fortunes.

lol, that guy doing the report is totally a pirater now. He seemed really impressed

did he say "a dancing bean" .you're forgetting sites like peekvid and the tv channels on winamp that basically stream tv shows and movies 24/7.

I use Itunes alot,I spent atleast $300 with ITUNES,also since I have a job I also spend alot on DVD's and games that I deem as worthy. (BF2,HL2,WoW and BF2142)

bf2142 was worth it?!?!

Also, buying music on Itunes sucks balls. You need to waste a cd every time you want to listen to music on something other than itunes.

I don't have an iPod, but I do have a car so having CD copies of stuff suits me just fine.

I love my Vision M.

Lesser Shameless plug!

F**king iTunes doesnt recognize my burner so the one and only cd I ever bought from them is useless... since I stopped using itunes because its crap.

then your burner sucks, dont blame Itunes.

Itunes isnt crap btw.

BOTH of my burner works with every other bit of software on my pc. Nero, WMP, powerproducer, movie maker, xillisoft programs, musicmatch jukebox etc.

iTunes is crap btw.

Meh, you can buy CD's for less than Itunes sells the albums for.

Actual CD>Lo-Fi DRM-tagged AAC :p

Besides, it's easier and cheaper to pirate

:D

psh who pirates anymore???......*shift eyes* also buying music on itunes does suck. DRM for the loss:E

man you guys whine to much,I just hook up my Ipod in my dads new CLS500 :p
So I dont even need CD's

While I enjoy my iPod, I use CDs because:
