w-w-wait does portal even have a story? i thought it was just a bunch of challanges?

Yes, there is a story. Have you played it?

i'm not really too sure about this (which is why i asked the question), so i'm not even going to vote until i hear some good ideas on the matter

Portal has one of the best videogame storylines ever. Missing it if you enjoy any FPS or puzzle game would be a sin.

it's got a lot of dark humor in it. and cake is a good story line, until glados basically throws it in your face and the story gets deeper... which actually makes the story line even better.

Nobody knows but I would love to see a prequel. Exactly prequel with Cave Johnson and Aperture Science in early 80's...
Can you hear me, Gabe?

With Portal: Prelude out, I'm not sure. It is made by a third party, but still, I would love a sequel.

Wherever they set it may not matter in practice, since if they retain the 'test-chamber' settings, the overall setting is something that you come to learn only at the point of your escape. My feeling is that they're going to exploit the possibilities for a prequel though, since the story can be sequeled to a degree by Episode Three

^i hope you're not talking about having a portal gun in ep 3. that would be horrible. i think the combine wants the aperture portal technology so that they can teleport from one point to another point on the same planet with less machinery, because their current teleporters can only teleport from universe to universe and takes a lot of machinery

There doesnt seem to be a whole lot of material left for a sequel (unless they really changed the game), so I say prequel.

Not only does it have a storyline, it's connected to Half-life. Your HL knowledge is disappointing. Phan Phail.

I say prequel; like wanted bob said, there's not really enough material left for a sequel. (by the looks of things anyway) Also, who is this cave johnson person everyone talks about?

I want to change my answer to "prequel."

A sequel implies
we'll play as Chell again. I'd rather they not do that and turn Portal into Portal 2: Half Life 2. The lab's already destroyed, and she made it out of the facility on time (ambiguous ending not withstanding). Throwing a random string of puzzles in the outdoors seems really stupid. How often do solid concrete walls come around in a forest?

It would ruin the flawless atmospheric game design that the first Portal set as the precedent.

If it's not coated in pearly white hallways and test chambers, it's not Portal.

A sequel, but one that takes place right after the end of Portal and takes place in Black Mesa's ruins. Classy!

brief history of Portal:
Aperture Science was founded by Cave Johnson in 1953. I 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave Aperture Science a contract stating that Aperture Science would provide all branches of the United States Military (save for the navy) with shower curtains.
From 1957 to 1975, the company was almost entirely dedicated to the development of shower curtains. In 1978, Cave Johnson contracted mercury poisoning while inventing a deadly rubber sheeting injected with mercury, which would be put into shower curtains that would be given to each member of the House Naval Appropriations committee. By 1979, both of Cave Johnson's kidneys had failed, and he had severe brain damage and "could not be convinced that time was not flowing backwards". While dying, Johnson created a 3-tier program which he thought would continue Aperture Science's success "far into the fast-approaching distant past."
The first tier was the Heimlich Counter-Maneuver, which would be used to interrupt the life-saving Heimlich maneuver. The second was the Take-A-Wish Foundation, which would take gifts from terminally ill children and award them to healthy (but wish deprived) adults. The third tier was, in Johnson's opinion, the least well thought out. It was described as "some kind of rip in the fabric of space", which, in Johnson's words, "would help with the shower curtains I guess". Soon after, Johnson expired. But before he died, engineers downloaded his mind into a computer.
In 1981, Aperture Science completed the first two tiers, and the announcement of this was accompanied by a lavish TV special. After a string of public disasters involving "very public" choking and sad children, the Aperture Science senior company officials were summoned before a Senate investigative committee. As the investigation continued, an engineer stated that some progress had been made with tier three. He referred to it as a 'man-sized ad hoc quantum tunnel through physical space with possible applications as a shower curtain'. The committee was permanently recessed and Aperture was given an open-ended contract to continue work on the Heimlich Counter-Maneuver as well as the 'Portal' project.
From 1981 to 1985, work on the 'Portal' project continued. During this time, several Fatah personnel choked to death on lamb chunks despite their bodyguards' intervention, showing that the government had apparently put the Heimlich Counter-Maneuver to work.
In 1986, Aperture Science's rivalry with Black Mesa began (see below). Aperture Science heard that Black Mesa worked on portal technology similar to that which Aperture Science was working on. In response, Aperture Science began to develop the Genetic Lifeform and Disc Operating System (GLaDOS). In 1996, the disk operating part was completed and work began on the genetic lifeform area.
Several years later, the untested GLaDOS was activated in the Aperture Laboratories on the same day as Aperture Science's first bring-your-daughter-to-work-day. Aperture Science claimed that "In many ways, the initial test goes well".
Though not on the official website's history page, GLaDOS mentions they also had a Self Esteem Fund for Girls, that you can donate one or all of your vital organs to.
What happened next is open to speculation. All that is known for certain is that at some point after her activation GLaDOS became self-aware, flooded the Aperture Science Enrichment Center with a deadly neuro-toxin, and was subsequently fitted with a Morality Core. GLaDOS was still later able to wrest control of the facility from its human occupants, and presumably either killed or imprisoned them. It is possible, however, that this lockdown and subsequent death of employees was due to the in-progress Combine invasion of Earth. A message from an unknown employee on the website mentions them being in lockdown for an unknown period of time. Also during this period, the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device was finally completed, but whether GLaDOS, Aperture Science or a combination of the two accomplished this is not known.
At the time of events depicted in Portal, the Aperture Science Enrichment Center seems to be long abandoned. Photos in the game, hints from GLaDOS that "the world has changed since Chell had last left the building", little is known about what is actually meant by "the last time". The events in Episode Two, suggest that Portal is set at approximately the same time as the events in Half-Life 2, after the Combine invasion of Earth had already taken place.
Cave Johnson will be a major character in the upcoming game. He is apparently a friend of the protagonist and is dead, but has been revived inside of a computer (Kotaku speculated that this may be a prototype of GLaDOS). From a casting call and leaked portions of the script, he appears to function much like GLaDOS did in the first game, intially helping the player before slowly becoming an antagonist while going insane. Cave is helpful towards the player, while simultaneously thinking about the afterlife and other issues, since he can do little now that he is dead other than think. A leaked casting call revealed a bit of Johnson's personality, seemingly a fantastic leader, who nonetheless is slightly clueless as to how science actually works. He is said to be from the Southern US and is more than a little reckless. "Heck, suspended as I am in this inky purgatorium, I got nothin' to do but think. What if them engineers didn't do me no favors pourin' me into a computer? What if they denied me my final reward?"-From a leaked portion of the script of Portal 2.

Where'd the pic of Cave Johnson come from? I've only ever seen him with his face covered with a companion cube.

Sequel

Valve isn't in the habbit of going back and turning their backstory/background into a game.

But this might be their first.......

:O :| :hmph:

BTW is portal a hard game i just got it today and it's installing now, i've tried the demo and that was easy is the game a bit harder or about the same difficulty to Portal: First Slice?

"Portal: The First Slice" is the first few levels of Portal, being the early levels you expect them to be easier than the later ones.

I would like a sequel.

A sequel can progress the story, whilst telling us about the events before Portal happened too.

If that Cave Johnson rumour was real, he will almost definatley be an AI, like GLaDOS. If you read the website it does say he began developing the AI when he was dieing.

To be honest I don't really care, as long as it's Portal 2. XD

I always thought of the ratman as being a previously cloned Chell but I could be wrong.
