Operation Black Mesa. A mod with an aim, an aim to recreate Opposing Force expansion to Half-Life from Gearbox using the Source Engine. Following in the methods of the Black Mesa team these boys are remaking everything from the 3D models to the maps.

An interesting idea that is slowly taking shape, though the team have recently undergone some setbacks in their work:
[br]
Shortly after our first media release we merged with a small team that had the same goal in mind, to remake opposing force called Operation Firesweep: Source and submited by FrereDarme. At the time this appeared to have been a smart move as what we saw of there?s was both nice and would have been helpful in development. This team was composed of three members, the first of which was kicked shortly after due to inactivity. Not too long after that there mapper proved to be incompetent and we were forced to kick him.
The third member of the incorporated team was later kicked from the Operation Black Mesa team after it was discovered none of the work he submitted was his own original work.

We have a short script in development to help enhance, yet of course not directly change, the story and development of key characters. With this our concept artists are working hard on concepts of this. In regards to the game experience our level designers have reconsidered certain maps following different criticisms. The different maps remain in constant development, including the multiplayer aspect of the game.

The team is currently looking for several new team members in order to speed up the development process.

You know your mod is in trouble when HL2.net filters out 5 of 6 images from your media release. Which is a shame, because we all love un-skinned renders around here.

Yeah, unskinned renders are always fab. Not that I'd want to sound cynical or derogatory, you umnderstand.

I'll be blunt and say that it looks like they've got quite a task ahead of them and I hope they're up to it. Genuinely, all the best to them.

Looks oke, hope they get to the point of showing trailers or gameplay. Can't wait...

You know, I was digging that concept drawing of the shock trooper until I noticed the tentacle coming out of his crotch. Not cool, OBM team.

To be honest, I'm not expecting much from this mod.

Good luck to them anyway.

Black Mesa is far more interesting, simply because Half-Life is much better, of course.
Op4 is not that exciting, but it will still be cool to see the Source engine take it to a whole new level

Will a Blue Shift Source team appear soon or what? :)

Well to an extent yes, but the Black Mesa team are one hell of a lot more talented, and I actually believe there is a danger of them finishing what they started. Operation Black Mesa will fall just as Opposing Source did before it.

Ooh, I didn't even know there was a team making BS to Source

You don't want them to finish Black Mesa? :O

Hes just saying he believes in the Black Mesa team, but in a way that didn't directly insult the OBM team.

I can understand why people think we won't go forward and succeed with our mod, but I can assure you we have some exciting plans that will allow you to be able to go from Black Mesa Source to Operation Black Mesa and continue reliving the experiance. With each area we are looking to enhance the remake with the new options the Source Engine allows us use.

It's early days just now and we look forward to showing you more very soon.

I am most intrigued by this Jonathan, does this mean you are talking with the BM(S) team about working together, or am i (as ever) totally getting the wrong end of the stick?

Hey Evo,

I think originally the guys wanted to do that but I think that idea fell through. I think for the fans it might have been a nice collective experience if we all worked together on Half-Life, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift but unfortunately this isn't the case.

I'm not sure how BM:S will play, I personally hope it will be very exciting and interactive like HL2, but I've been developing the script and design for Opposing Force in a way that it takes full advantage of the Source engine to create a new experience whilst reliving the original. We're going for a more cinematic approach and enhancing the original game, this is something we're excited to show people when we make some progress.

There are a lot of moments in Opposing Force which allows us to push the envelop in a few areas to make for exciting moments, and allow the players to be full immersed in the game play.

and

I'll be writing the game's design document and script, it'll be the original, with some enhancements Wink

(last take from the OPBM forum)

These make me very intrigued and excited about this mod, hopefully it can be a worthwhile reincarnation of the original!

Thanks Evo, we look forward to sharing more with you guys very soon :)

Will be in touch.

Jonny
