Optimizing your monitor colour scheme

My desktop has a very washed out display. For a while I've tried to experiment with the brightness and colours, but nothing changed (I am talking of the options that go through the monitor itself).

I wonder if there are utilities out there that let you optimize your monitor scheme for optimal quality.

If you're really serious. I'm thinking about getting one so my monitor is calibrated right for my photography.

There are programs that adjust the color curves on your monitor (like adobe gamma)
