The Orange Box has blasted it's way back into the top 10 selling PC games this week, NPD statistics show. The interesting thing about this is that the NPD group doesn't take digital download sales into account, so this is only a portion of how well our favourite gaming deal must be doing.

Good sales deserve good games.

What prompted the rise in sales? The Heavy update?

I wonder if retail sales get more than digital? I've always assumed Valve made most of their money these days through Steam because almost everyone here uses that, but I suppose for the casual non-Valve-centric gamer that's less common.

Digital sales for Valve will generate way more money than retail. Whenever we buy a Valve game on steam they'll get all of the money, whilst with retail they wouldn't get as much due to the publisher etc.

Also, chains suck.

Well yeah I know Valve makes considerably more $$ per sale on Steam, but I was wondering about the number of units sold themselves.

In an interview with Gabe recently about L4D, he spoke about the heavy update, quoting that they see a 20 or 30% increase in sales of TF2 with those large updates they put together. You can see why they don't mind adding more content :)

Woman TF2 characters update can increase the sales in a hour.

I doubt we'll see a female TF2 update. Also a hell of a lot of people would be up in arms if the female classes weren't near identicle to the males and the rest, myself included, would be up in arms if they were. Valve get flamed for every single update but the internet might asplote if they added female characters.

I think the figure 25% got bandied about a long time back, it's probably more than that now (30-35%). I'd still expect retail is higher in unit sales than Steam still, but in the case of HL2 Valve made more money from the Steam sales than they did from retail sales.

Don't ask me for sources on that, it's something I vaguely recall from a Gabe/Doug interview a few years back. They never got into specifics of numbers, but I'm sure 1 in 4 was mentioned and the profitability. If it was nearer 1 in 3 now it wouldn't surprise me.

The internet explodes every time they do anything.

It has to be related to the Heavy update. They mentioned everytime they do an update they also have a "free weekend" and it always generates more sales for Valve.

Makes sense. I love that their philosophy is it is better to make money by winning more customers than by nickeling and diming (cough Xbox updates cough) existing customers.

Except that Live isn't nickeling and diming, it's dollaring. Ten bucks to change your username is just ridiculous.

Damn and i was wondering when a mod would "take care of it"

They are funny the 1st few times or in certain topics. At least to me.

I think Valve probably makes alittle over 60% of sales on steam. Thats my guess.

Which makes perfect sense for the company and the consumer. If your a regular jo and are seeing 20 games come out but out of those 20 only 1 keeps getting new content over the coarse of months you would think to yourself damn what am i missing out on? or if i buy this instead of this ill be getting a lot more for my money. With every update they capture more and more people they thought twice about buying the game. Its a chain reaction and its brilliant.
