NEW YORK (August 31, 2006) -- While some die hard fans of iconic sixties series Star Trek may be thrilled at the show's return to syndication, others may be up in arms. As TVGuide.com reports today, the show returns to the small screen for the first time since 1990 with some startling differences: All 79 episodes are being digitally remastered with computer-generated effects not possible when Gene Roddenberry created the show 40 years ago.

Trek's opening theme is also getting an overhaul: The music has been re-recorded in stereo with a bigger orchestra and a new singer has been hired to wail those famous but wordless vocals. In additions, certain goof-ups will be corrected: In "The Naked Time," there was no beam coming out of Scotty's phaser when he tried to cut through the bulkhead outside Engineering.

Now there is.

half the fun of the old star trek series was it's low tech and shitty props/sets ..this just seems like a revisionist cashcow

Wow, complaining about making something better. Never heard of this before.

Complaints were had when Red Dwarf went 'up-market' with bigger budgets etc. for series VII and VIII

Damn right - they ****ed it up. They even screwed up some of my favourite early episodes by cutting dialogue to fit in or extend a special effect. The original series one and two are as good as sci-fi comedy gets imo (3-5 have some great episodes and are still well worth a watch, the rest is proper shite)

Back on topic - bloody heathens. What they're doing to Star Trek sounds awful in every possible way.

Don't forget to shop in the new stars from previous movies!

I never understood why Anikan was shown as a young man in that scene, but Ben was his older self.

As for the Star Trek episodes, it'll just be a wait and see thing for me. I didn't mind the remastering of the original Star Wars trilogy. As long as the original unedited version is still available on DVD it shouldn't matter if changes like this are made.

"better" is relative ..you may think it adds something but I dont ..it's like colourizing old black and white movies to give them more wider commercial appeal like what ted turner did in the 90's with his back catalogue

they sure as hell made Casablance "better" when they colourized it

Yeah, colorizing old movies I always found stupid.

But with Star Trek, they're just adding some special effects, not changing something entirely. Black and white evokes a sort of mood, even a theme. Adding a proper laser bolt to a phaser doesn't really change much.

it's the same thing, they're changing backgrounds and in one instance they're redoing a scene that shows the earth ..that's a pretty big deal ...it takes some of the "cheese" factor that makes the original show so endearing ..I like it the way it is ..leave it alone it doesnt need fixing

I like my Star Trek to look a little ropey.

New effects could easily end up looking out of place and lacking consistency with the rest of the carboard backgrounds and coloured bits of polystyrene that pass as moon rocks. It doesn't matter if things look a little fake as long as they match - that makes them alittle more real. When aspects stand out - like they have with other shows that have had this treatement - they just remind the viewer that they're watching a tv show that looks a little weird.

you gotta love the fact that in the original series (set hundred of years in the future) they have analog readouts on some of their systems ..I remember the episode where they go back to the 1960's and as they're going back in time the analog clock was going backwards ..2 huge mistakes right there that shouldnt be fixed

I am frankly rather indifferent to these changes, but only if they are used to fix mistakes.

The changes George Lucas made to THX1138 were largely a huge benefit to an overlooked movie. Only a handful of effects detract from the presentation, and only because they're "in your face" and superfluous.

The changes to the first star warses, however, were almost entirely unecessary, almost always "in your face", and often even changed plot and character points in an already popular series.

When you create an all-new scene that was never there before, that's when you are crossing the line.

So making more 3-D backgrounds and fixing phasers is awesome. But if they start redubbing people and adding whole new action scenes, things become less good.

here's the changes from star wars ..pretty extensive/unnecessary when you see it this way

click "click here to view images" (duh)

there's the infamous scene they added later on to make it look like Greedo fired the first shot instead of the original version where Han solo fired the first shot ..politically correct bullshit

Being as I've never fully seen an Episode of Star Wars, I'm all for the transition. But for someone who has grown up with them and is a fan of the series I can see how they would miss the original "feel" and fakeness of the films.

this irks most of all:

Trek's signature opening theme is also being upgraded: The music has been re-recorded in stereo, and a new singer has been hired to wail the wordless vocals.

wtf? that song is forever stuck in my head ...the aaahhhhhhh ah ah ahhhhhhhhh is classic you cant change that!

Quit being so staunchly opposed to change stern :E

Actually I don't really care. Star Trek was never my thing.

See, now that's almost what I'm talking about. The vast majority of those changes are beneficial.
There's subtle stuff like colour correction or fixing the weakest special effects work.

But the big changes, like adding the huge CGI jabba the hutt in his own feature scene and making han solo wussy, are dumbtastic.

Spot the problem in these pics...

Personally, they should not have changed it. The movies were fine as is. They were state of the art at the time, and I dont think they should have done things, whether it be adding contrast, or changing scenes and explosion effects...
