WTF? self righteous give me an Oscar sniffer Sean Penn wins over Mickey Rourke after Rourke cleaned up at pretty much every other film awards show...:frown: :(

I think Rourke probably didn't do himself any favours with his dalliance with WWE etc and some of his off the cuff comments at the other ceremonies, but surely Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) would of been a better alternative than Penn. The man exudes smugness through every facet of his being....

:E

But really, I'm not sure smugness and winning an Oscar are mutually exclusive.

Interesting/cool that Ledger won one.

Is Slumdog really that good? I mean, I want to see it and I hear good things but man, it's got the awards goddamn tamed looking at the results.

I think it had just the right mix of critical acclaim and serious drama. This was a fantastic year for what some people refer to as "genre movies" with the Dark Knight, Wall-E, etc. But, there weren't so many out-of-the-park successes in serious drama, which is very often where the Academy selects it's winners from. I have yet to see the Wrestler, so it's possible it could have that right mix too, and Millionaire just happened to win out.

Yeah but Penn is one of those actors whose spent most of his career hunting the Oscar, he's been doing 'worthy' films for a long time (I'll grant that 21 grams is an excellent film though). I don't think you could say accuse Daniel Day Lewis of the same, the man is just practising his craft and is damn good at it. Let's no forget Sean went full retard in I am Sam, and from what I can see he went full mincing screaming queen in Milk. Personally why get a straight actor in to play the part of a gay man, when you could of just as easily got a gay actor in to play the part? It's seems like a clear case of 'watch me act' more than anything else.

It's exceptionally well made film Antipop, and a worthy winner however once you've seen it you'll never feel the urge to watch it again. It just doesn't scream 'repeat viewing' say unlike NCFOM or The godfather etc, etc

Oh, I bet. I mean I'm a huge fan of Boyle - 28 Days and Sunshine are two of my favourite films - I just wasn't aware of how much of an impact this movie had made. I knew it had done pretty well but not this well.

If my friends were not all at uni I would of seen it by now. Hopefully it's still showing through the Easter hols...

I thought I was alone with the whole Slumdog thing, so that makes me feel better. I mean, yeah, it was a good movie, but I felt it lost serious steam when it moved on to the older characters. Really a damn shame about Rourke.

Oscar Podcast!

EDIT: Aw, Ben cut out this bit :(

Ben: We should have seen all these films.
Laurence: It's ridiculous. If only there was some way to know the movies in advance...then we could just watch them all as they came out. If only we had more time! Wait. That's it! *clicks fingers* Time!
Ben: ?
Laurence: We'll build a time machine!

Mickey Rourke not winning Best Actor is a travesty.

I really want to see Departures, it looked really good from what little they showed. Oh yeah, and This Way Up, that short animated feature that was nominated, looked awesome.

The Oscars committee are like the Olympics one; they should all be ***ked and burned as far as I care.

Mickey Rourke deserving best Actor? Er...why? Was Wrestler THAT good? Only seen him in Sin City and Man On Fire...He was even in a JVD film with that red-haired basketball guy whos name began with an R thats on the tip of my tongue. For some reason I keep thinking Rodney.

Anyway, Slumdog got best picture (agreed) and thank god Ledger got an oscar, id be seriously pissed if he didnt, as would everyone I think.

You dont think he gave a good performace? In other words, he wouldnt have got an award if he were alive?

I thought it was an amazing performance by Heath. I think he sucks in all his other films (or just plays annoying whiny characters). But i find his portrayal of Joker disturbingly good.

Can't say i'm as annoyed as all of you I really enjoyed milk, heath deserved an oscar and slumdog deserved the praise.

I wonder if Heath would have won if he was still alive today ?

Coments ?

There's no range to the Joker, he just is the same throughout the movie. Sure he's creepy..but there is no emotional range to the performance.

I doubt it tbh.

When someone dies, it means that everything good said about them is only said because they are dead.

I dunno about you guys but I heard Heath Ledger was a pretty good Joker in The Dark Knight dontcha know. :upstare:

Heath would most certainly of been nominated, and I'd say would deffo have still won, were he still alive. There's no question to it - dead or not, his performance in The Dark Knight received acclaim right across the board.

Yes ... yes The Wrestler was that good. It was the best movie released this year, and Mickey Rourke gave the best performance.

Slumdog really was just a good movie. It wasn't that amazing, and I'm a huge Boyle fan. It definitely wasn't his best work and it definitely wasn't the best movie this year (though the best movies this year didn't even get nominated). However, I don't want to diss it too much, as it was a good movie.

As far as Heath goes ... I think he deserved it. The Dark Knight was a great movie and his character was the main reason why. He practically carried the film in a supporting actor role and completely smashed the idea of a typical action movie villain (though a lot of that was due to Nolan).

I see "Synecdoche, New York" wasn't nominated for anything.

At all.

I think I might just go kill someone.
