i was looking at operating systems and i saw that the linux os was comparable cheap to windows xp, is there a real noticable difference in preformance between the two os's, if so which is better for gaming? I was just interested because at new egg the linux 9.1 is like 35 bucks and xp is like 100 bucks.

If you are unfamiliar with Linux I suggest you stick with Windows. Linux is for people who like to mess with code and have alot of free time on thier hands.

Also it is better for running a server.

depends which distro of linux you choose, debian, mandrake, suse are all good.. but for games.. windows xp is the way to go since mos of the games out there arent compatible with anyother OS besides windows..

alright thanks guys i just wasn't sure but since im not really that good with computers i guess ill just stick with windows, but it was worth a shot to see if i could get somthing i could use for $35.:(

Linux is free btw, but you can buy it in a store.

Comparably cheap? Awfully hard to compete with free.

Windows is generally considered better if what you want is gaming, but we won't go into that here. :p

there is a windows emulator (WINe?) that supports pretty much every game out there...

Im not sure about linux being "difficult to use", I guess it depends on which version of it you pick. It would be nice to see some sort of a guide (comparing redhat to all the other versions).

you also have to remember that not all games work with emulators for windows in linux, so you could be out of luck depending on what games you play.

true. And if you have an ATi video card....well, let's just say you'll be less than pleased with the hassle of making drivers work.

Well I have found it is not so hard to install the drivers as much getting good performance out of them. Wine is fine, but WineX is much better featuring DirectX support among many other things.

If you are new to Linux and want to dive straight in I recommend you try a distribution called Ubuntu Linux (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/) being based upon Debian, it has apt, and is very easy to use.

It is becoming a more and more viable alternative to Windows for home users, but before you try installing it, you may want to check the Transgaming site (http://www.transgaming.com/) to make sure your games work.

You could use VMware and run the OS off a virtual machine.

That would be totally pointless for gaming, though you could use VMware to mess around with some Linux distro's and find your favorite :)

Knoppix rules for gaming!!

Well, I played pacman on it once...
With NO lag.

I suggest windows XP home edition.
ok cause i just heard that windows 2000 is a more stable operating system and that there really is not really any advantages to windows xp over 2000, just that it is the newest thing out.

2000 is a bit more stable, but I would recommend xp pro just 'cause it's a little faster, especially on startup.

well if i were to use 2000 it would be professional edition and the reason that i was hoping that it would be ok for gaming and just general stuff is because my friend is giving it to me for free rather than paying 90 bucks for xp, is 2000 just about as good for running programs such as games, etc... as xp?

I would just bite the bullet and get the XP. If you get the 2000 for free you could just buy the upgrade which is way cheaper I believe.

alright thanks guys, for all the help i think ive made my desision.

Windows 2000 sucks, plain and simple. If you're going to get Windows get XP.

All and all, If you can manage to setup your linux install perfectly ( with graphics drivers and all ) you can actually play a lot of games, even non-linux games through Cedega ( gaming version of wine, use to be winex ) Some games even get better fps in linux. As for knowledge of what games work in linux or not... anything opengl should work on linux.

That was an utterly retarded question. I think the most advanced game for Linux is what? UT2k3?

Yea Linux has zero possibilities for 99% of the gaming community unless you join and help start the coding.

For the above post:

Only if you strip Linux to the bones to use that WINE. The average PC gamer isn't even close to knowing what he needs to know. Not to mention, OpenGL games are limited in selection.

Moral of the story:

Just get XP.

Side note:

The "2000 is more stable then XP" stuff is plain and pure BS. WTF... XP was BUILT on 2000... Took the base, and made it better (minus SP2, of course ;)).

That's possibly the most uninformed thing I've ever heard anyone say. That is all.

Isn't XP way better? Or have I been severely misinformed?

There is Doom 3 for linux, and with the cedega windows emulator (which is made for gaming) you can play quite a few games on linux.

http://www.transgaming.com/news.php?newsid=135 now it supports half life 2 :)
