i found my old Alpha Centauri CD a couple weeks back, and i've been playing it almost every day since then. i just can't really explain the hold this classic Turn-Based Strategy has taken over me, not that i'm complaining ;)

and of course re-kindling my love with turn-based games i come across the memory of an old and very unmentioned game by the moniker "Outpost" it was a turn based strategy from '96 i think it was. maybe 95, or heck, possibly even 94 i can't remember 'xactly.

and that brings me to the point of this post, i was wondering if any of you fine folks have played this game, or remember it? as i remember it, it was often confusing, poorly explained at times, and had a small problem with a particularily irritating research bug.

anothe reason im asking here is because i really enjoyed playing the game and i went looking for it on-line because my local store doesn't have it, and i doubt anyone would carry it especially since it didn't get much recognition in the magazines but i've been unable to find it anywhere, or barely any mention of it.

bear in mind i am NOT talking about Outpost2 an "RTS" loosely following the original gameplay and i disliked that game, too much emphasis on conflict with the other colony.

no one has heard of this game? you're kidding me right? come on, at least some of you must remember it for its notoriously under-rated gameplay? no? no one then?

and i thought you guys were cool :(

I played the Demo of Outpost 2.

And I remember having to extract a load of stuff before some lava flow wiped out my base.

i love this game LOADS... but it doesnt run on my pc or any windows xp, the patch didnt work on my other pc so im not bothering on this one. if you got it working on XP let me know how :)

heh, outpost; that brings back memories! I loved the concept of that game and remember playing it a lot on and off, but I never really got very far into it: I don't really remember if it was because of bugs or just a short attention span. Still have the cd lying around though.

If you like turn based games you should try Heroes of Might and Magic III and IV. III was better in my opinion, but they're both very good.

Heroes III was the only other game beside Half-Life I've found to be worth it's money.

yeah! heroes III was a blast! hehehe, lots of good memories with that game, loved the hotseat ability.

outpost is one of those "good concept, poor execution" games that we've seen so much of, just like some movies i could mention

*cough*new star wars*cough*

oldagerocker, actually i had tons of problems getting alpha centauri to work on my xp system, the main problem was that it could not understand my cpu, apparantly p4 is "unsupported" :p, there is actually a line of code you have to insert into your terran.exe file, or maybe it was the config file... hmm,

actually sorry, it has to go in the "AlphaCentauri.Ini" file the line is

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1

under preferences, that combined with the XP patch should get you back to colonizing planet in no time ;)

my goodness gusolson, i don't suppose you would be willing to.. ah, "loan" me the game? hmm, how long does it take for games to be available in the public domain?...hmm, :D?

outpost 2 is pretty boring, there just aren't enough things to do, hell, i've spent more time playing Outpost 1 then i have outpost 2, and that was back in 94 -_-
