ok im forced to use a rly small hard drive for the time being (8 gig)
and its full. the problem is i can only account for 5.5 gigs of data. i need my 2 gb space!! where did it go!?!? it was there yesterday! im not crazy i tells you!! *gets wheeled off into mental institution*

Page file?
hyberfil.sys is taking up 1GB on my hard drive :S

Stuff like that

resore point space,

recovery point space, images(drive images) hidden, page file......

Windows XP takes up about 6GB and you only have a 8GB HDD? Wow. Can you install ANYTHING on there?

No hard drive actually has the compacity it says it dose. Example: My 120 is really only 114 when you look at it's properties, and my 80 is only 76.3.
Boot sector and serveral other things take up that extra space as well.

My WINDOWS folder is 1.6GB
Unless your taking the Documents and Settings folder into account
4.5GB for my Documents and Settings folder at the moment, with lots of gamesaves, a few music albums and alot of random crap.

Well, you can't see the whole shabang from windows itself.

Registry entries for one. Windows does all kinds of shit behind the scenes that you can't see.

A fresh Windows XP install can no way take up 6GB, you only have a 700MB CD, of which only about 580MB is used

Which brings me to ask: Where exactly on the hard drive is the Registry stored? I always thought in the WINDOWS folder

Updates my friend. Updates.

My SP2 install uses about 4 gigs of space.

And AFAIK, the registry is hidden deep withing your FS.

Nothing, or nothing should be hidden from me, I have set Do not hide hidden files/system files. Put on Show Extensions for known file types (IMHO disabling file extensions is a pathetic idea) and whatever the other ones are.

The registry has to be a proper file, or something anyway, as you are able to edit it, unlike the System Volume Information folder on each partition you have.

Apparently they got a lot of calls from people screwing up their registries and asking for help, because in XP, the registry is located in "hives" and are much more difficult to get to. Regedit still works, but to get your hands onto the "files" themselves is not as easy as a search for system.dat.

Hard Drive manufacturers are bloody liars, when they say XXX GB they mean XXX billion bytes, not XXX * 2^30 bytes like what the definition of GB states.

no it doesnt, for one thats impossible, you cant fit 6gigs of data on a standard CD.
secondly my windows folder is like 1.8 gigs or something.
thirdly, i dont know myself how i can fit ANYTHING on here, its cramping my style dammit,
fourthly i hate XP its so space ineffecient, but probly because it doesnt need to be because most people have a majillion gigabyte hard drive nowadays

i used the SequoiaView, and it tells me my pagefile is taking up 20% of my hard drive. what can i do to fix it

k,

roght click my computer>properties> performance settings > >advance >> paging file......

u should set it to about a gig, if u have lots of ram then this can be lower, however i highly doubt this is the case as you have an 8 gig HDD

BUY A NEW ONE

Windows doesn't take much up, I think my Dad has 1GB taken from his 10GB Hard drive, that includes all the drivers, and updates for windows.
