I have the old style PC3200 memory and want to overclock it. Are there any guides on how to this? I have 4*512MB DDR sticks each running at 333Mhz. I want to get them to run at 400Mhz
Firstly, your DDR is rated at DDR400 (PC3200) as you have in your sig, so there is no reason why they should have to run at DDR333 other than the motherboard auto-detecting the speed incorrectly. Secondly, as you overclock the CPU via the FSB, the speed that your ram is working at also increases. DDR = double data rate, so to get the working speed of your ram you double the FSB value (which at stock would be 200: x 2 = 400mhz), which you can increase in order to raise your CPU speed, therefore increasing the speed of your ram at the same time.
(i know overclocking is more complex than this, but for the sake of this query i've left out other areas)
I have the sli-premium version of the motherboard that you have, so the majority of the options in the bios should be the same. You should be able to find the ram settings, second tab along in the bios > CPU settings (first option in the list on that page) > DRAM settings (this is from memory, so i hope it's correct !).
Here you should find a list of settings that allow you to alter the ram timings etc. At the top of the list you should be able to set the ram speed, chances are that this is set at auto, in which case it will be running the ram at whatever speed it detects it as, or decides it should run. You should be able to change this to manual and set the DDR speed to 400 rather than 333. This setting is the equivalent of a memory divider on some other boards (a 5:6 ram:FSB ratio i believe).
At DDR400 your ram will be running 1:1 with the FSB, so 2 x the FSB value (double date rate remember). At DDR333, the ram will be running at a lower percentage of that value (a division if you will !). In the case of DDR333 this will be roughly 83 percent (100/400 x 333).
One thing, if you have increased the FSB in order to overclock your CPU then your ram will then be running above its rated settings, so if you have a large overclock on your CPU i would reset the bios, change the DDR speed to 400 and then go through the overclocking process again.
the reasojn i am running at 333Mhz is because i have 4*512 DIMMS and so for stability my mobo decided to lower the speed to 333. Il try messing with the BIOS tonight and see what happens, hopefullt I can get all 4 sticks running at 400Mhz
