Doesn't the airbag only trigger when the front of the car is hit?

The airbag triggering when you hit the steering wheel hard would only make it worse, right? I mean you've already lost most of your forward momentum making the impact thus triggering the bag, having yourself forced immediately backword is just worse. That's why they are triggered when the front of the car smashes into something, so it deploys before you smack into the dash or the wheel.

So I'm assuming [Matt]'s right, but it's still hilarious I'd feel like such an ass.
