Religion has a strong influence over inmates, especially those on death row or with life sentences and those particularly remorseful for their crimes, since they are truly without hope for ever getting out and are therefore more concerned about their next life rather than the one they currently exist, since they've ruined it. Prison is also a very difficult place for most inmates, and they turn to a higher power for help and assistance since nobody else is going to help them.

Walters said Hilton told her she had not been wailing, sobbing or screaming during her first three days in prison, as had been reported.

She asked Hilton what had led to her being "reassigned" to house arrest.

"I was not eating or sleeping. I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage. I was not myself. It was a horrible experience," Hilton said.
