I've got a folder with a small collection of .zip and .rar stuff I've downloaded over the years, but I couldn't find a password for.

Anyone know of some good software that can guess the password, or force them opened?

EDIT: I'm downloading something now. Hopefully this should work.

This is kind of exciting. I can't wait to see what is inside. Like a treasure chest. :D

I got a couple passcrackers from torrents

I've got 6 locked rar files

Rar should just die BTW. 7zip is better and free.

so I tried brute force combination of 1-3 digits/letters on one of the rar's and no luck. It took 15 minutes for that.

That's OK.

I'll set this thing to go with up to like 7 digit password and come back the next day ... or two.

It should work though.

Just google the word 'porn' and you'll get what's inside your treasure chest!

Unless you're extremely lucky, its going to take forever (much more than a few days) to brute force any passwords.

hmm.

I've actually guessed a password within a few tries on more than one occassion.

Not so - If the brute forcer is coded properly, a modern single-core cpu (3ghz) can try up to 5 million passwords a second (as long as the file is local). A dual-core is double this amount, and a 7-'core' cell like the PS3 can theoretically try 35 to 40 million every second. Won't take more than a few hours to attempt alphanumeric strings from 0 to 15 ... and I doubt the password isn't included somewhere in there.
